Titty as a name?

Discovered a copy of Swallows and Amazons and one of the girls is called Titty.
The others have more standard names for the time.
I assume it is a diminutive of something, but what, and why?
Surely by the 1930s there was some correlation between the words tits and breasts?

Didn't know it had been changed!

I don't think it has been changed in any of the books.

It was changed in the fairly recent film, but I think to Tatty rather than Kitty. Kitty was used in a film back in 60s or so. However with all of the other changes in that film this was a fairly mild one. At least it had a reason behind it and wasn't too far from the original book.
The film would have been better titled "a children's adventure that we've pinched popular title to try and fool you into watching it."

There were those Biggles books in which people 'ejaculated' which made my dad laugh.

I remember 'Whose line is it anyway' when I'm sure they used to refer to these. That or something that someone like Paul Merton would have referenced.

Genuinely thought this was a baby naming thread and am now seriously disappointed.

Ditto!

I remember the Five Findouters and dog included a boy called Fatty. Wonder if he's reverted to his real name of Frederick now.

He was 'Fatty' because his initials spelled F.A.T - Frederic Algernon Trotteville iirc

Apologies to everyone ready to launch an attack if this was a potential baby name - I thought the wording would attract more traffic!

I seem to remember Marilla and others in the Anne of Green Gables books being prone to ejaculation too.

When I read the subject title, I thought for a moment that Boris Johnson had created another child 😀.

But he was fat in the illustrations too.

Bessie sounds old and fat, that’s what’s wrong with it.

My eldest wanted her little sister to be called Knobby! Titty and Knobby could be great friends! :P

😅😅😅

knew someone with this as a nickname. She was from Africa and it as a short version of her name. Can't remember what the name act was though.

There’s Titilayo in (possibly, not 100% sure) Zulu/Xhosa, or another of the S. African languages.

I’ve met more than one Titilayo. Mostly not shortened to Titty though!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/07/2023 18:15

@Saschka that was the name !

I don’t agree with changing books. When will it end?
Should we change all the Willies and Dicks? We still have Willy Wonker.
Next will be all Karens changed to Sharon or something.

We have a couple in the village, very much loved. Elderly. They are fanny and Wullie. In Scotland. They own it.

RiftGibbon · 18/07/2023 17:59

I've a nearby neighbor called Dick. He lives in a close which backs onto our garden. So that makes for interesting conversations, "I saw Dick around the back."
