Can I do this while signed off from work

Signed off with a chesty virus and I’m starting to feel a bit better and feel ready to get some fresh air. My bf has randomly got free tickets to a family friendly food and drink festival which is at a park, and wants to take our little one and thinks it would be good for me to get out for some fresh air. It’s a daytime thing and there’s food and drinks stalls. I’d like to try and venture out as it’s at our nearby park but I’m worried if work see me? Would that look bad? Or is it okay to go out for a bit for fresh air and go enjoy being out for an hour.

It really isn't a problem. If someone from work sees you, so what? You're going back on Monday anyway. If they ask how you are, then tell them that you're testing the water right now. If they say on Mon that they saw you there you can feel easy about it.

NeedToBookAGetaway · 15/07/2023 11:52

Yes you're signed unfit for work. Not unfit for fresh air.
I wouldnt give it a second thought.

NoTouch · 15/07/2023 11:54

If you dont normally work weekends and are back on Monday then I dont see the problem.

EversoDetermined · 15/07/2023 11:56

I'd go provided you aren't coughing, its a wander round a few stalls in a local park not Glastonbury.

Oh, and I remember once when dd had been ill for a while and off school for about 10 days, saying to the doc that we'd taken her to something or other and I was really defensive about it trying to explain that I realised that being off school I shouldn't have taken. He said she's been ILL not naughty, and doesn't deserve a PUNISHMENT by missing doing something nice and gentle and FUN! Indeed, she was far more likely to recover if she had a few treats and went out a bit.

Not contagious anymore and going to go back on Monday yes, I was only thinking of going for an hour to sit in park with something to eat with my family. Not start raving and downing shots.

Go and enjoy.

What’s the issue if you’re going back on Monday?

Crunchymum · 15/07/2023 12:26

Absolutely fine as you're going back on Monday.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2023 13:23

An hour, no alcohol, seems fine to me as you are going back on Monday to work.

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 13:24

Of course it is ok ,being off sick doesn’t mean you need to be a hermit .

Getting fresh air whilst having a chest infection usually involves sitting in the garden.

If you've got energy for a full days festival you've got energy for work. Don't mean to sound harsh, I've recently had to take a short amount of time off with a chest infection.

TherealmrsT · 15/07/2023 13:38

Go, it's a good test to see if you are well enough to go back on Monday.
I had flu and felt better round the house but actually going out was still to much for another day or two.

RecycleMePlease · 15/07/2023 14:02

Fine to go - but you will be knackered (I'm just coming off something that sounds similar) so take it super easy, don't plan any hikes whilst carrying kiddo!

Qilin · 15/07/2023 14:08

I have pneumonia at the moment and been off work for a week and half. I'm just starting to feel a little better.
Last night I went to a concert - long awaited, paid a lot for tickets, had seas fortunately. It wasn't ideal but I wasn't about to waste almost £200 and miss the chance when they may not tour again.
I rested all day, had a late afternoon nap and only arrived for the main act - all to ensure I was able to go. It was also in home city so didn't have to travel.
Have to say that I am now shattered. Had a long lie in and not really fit for anything today. Concert was amazing though and I'm glad I rallied for it,

As a result of going I've also agreed to return to work on Monday. Was brought up with the whole, no work no play mantra. I teach little children so it may be interesting, We shall see if that's a good idea or not on Monday evening I guess.

I agree that we have really lost the idea of convalescence these days. It's clearly very different to spend a couple of hours doing something which involves sitting down and not being bus than it is to spend 8-9 hours working in a busy environment with the stresses and energy that takes.

Surely that depends on your work!

I would have enough energy for a couple of hours out far sooner than I'd have the energy for an 8 hour busy day at work.

And what the op is planning - an hour or so sat down in the fresh air - is very different to most people's work day and requires far less effort.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/07/2023 14:14

You're going back on Monday? Definitely not an issue then imo.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 15/07/2023 14:20

Wear a mask, wrap up warm, wear a mask, take a folding chair, don't mix or get too close to anyone, wear a mask.

Your DH needs to do all the heavy lifting, child care, etc.

Enjoy

Whattodo1112 · 15/07/2023 16:49

I didn’t bother going in the end. Felt crap suddenly again and stayed at home watching films. Maybe I’m not better yet. Sorry for the waste of a post everyone

If you were signed off yesterday but able to go to a festival today then if I worked with you I'd think you were taking the piss.
Signed off last Monday and due back next week? That's probably ok.
But if you really are that unwell I'd be surprised at you wanting to spend a whole day out tbh.

This.

EversoDetermined · 15/07/2023 20:44

Hope you feel better soon @caringcarer
