How awful is a tooth extraction?

Apparently I have a silent infection under a previously root filled and crowned lower molar. It has become very un-silent!

Saw the dentist three months ago who gave me antibiotics and two choices for the tooth. First choice is re attempt the root filling at a cost of roughly £1000 plus a new crown, or extraction.

Dentist said that there would be a high failure rate if I go for the root filling and would then still need the tooth extracting.

Two days ago the infection has kicked off again and it really hurts. Coincidentally I have a check up appointment this Thursday.

Trouble is, I'm not sure that I am brave enough to get the tooth pulled. I don't really mind having dental work done but having a tooth pulled frightens the life out of me and I'm not sure that I can do it. Dentist has already said that it would be a very straight forward extraction.

How terrible is it, it's all I can think about and I'm really upset about it.

@B0G0F Are you saying that you had a tooth extracted without anaesthetic? No way could I do that. I dont mind the needle, that's the best bit as it makes it pain free.

Yes, without a needle, no pain relief.
It hurt like nothing else, but it was over very quickly.

That is beyond brave. I could never do that. That must have hurt so much.

I wouldn't recommend it. It only lasted moments.

I had the tooth removed and will be having a dental implant. I'll have to have local anaesthetic for that.

If I were you, I'd not bother with the root canal if it's not likely to be successful.

urgh ... shudder....
You're the brave one.

It's more horrible to imagine. In reality it's really nothing at all. Get your anaesthetic, then you feel a sort of tugging, then it's done. It doesn't hurt and the dentist won't be leaning on your chest! I've had 7 teeth out and all were OK. You'll be fine. Sounds as if it's a good idea to get it out!! Here's a 🤗

Hi, I had the tooth extracted today.

That's brave of you 💪. I hope that all was ok? Just think you won't have to deal with any more infection 😉😉

Op just found this post when consider whether to have my tooth extracted or root canal. Have you had any complications as in a larger gap appearing? Any regrets?

Katemax82 · 14/12/2023 14:26

I had a surgical extraction recently, it wasn't fun but then again they struggled to get the tooth out as it was a back tooth and very broken. I'm glad I had it done though as the infection was far worse
