Gallbladder attacks advice

1000 replies

HeyBwoss · 11/06/2023 13:02

Been having episodes of pain since January but have now had 2 in the past 2 weeks. I thought it was trapped wind (actually the first one I thought was a heart attack, at first) but have seen it may be gallstones. All my pain matches everything I have read. Except for labour, it's the worst pain I've ever had.

Anyway, I'm hoping to see the GP tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm terrified to eat incase something triggers it. Does anyone have any advice on how to manage or anything that stops the attacks? Thanks in advance

Did she give you an idea of the time frame @ihaveayod ?

dudsville · 23/09/2023 08:44

@MiniCooperLover ,it's so debilitating, takes so much out of the day and a body.

dudsville · 23/09/2023 08:47

I'm just on my way for the 1 month post op follow up with the surgeon. 3 off the 4 scabs have come off. The one top middle is so hanging on, and looks to me like its setting off centre, as if it will have a top lip. I don't really care, i don't wear bikinis, but I'll be curious to see if he thinks that's what's happening.

@dudsville Hi, no she didn't, but to be fair I didn't ask. I'm hoping because it is one of the NHS privately commissioned hospitals it won't be too long. According to the link to the waiting times it should be within 19 weeks, but my initial appointment was a lot quicker than the information given in the link. I'm hopeful that it could be before Christmas

dudsville · 23/09/2023 13:05

Fingers crossed!

My follow up went well and the surgeon didn't think the last remaining scab was going to form a lip, yay! The bonus was he also knew about hearts, so i finally had a proper consultation about that, and my question re the role of cholesterol and heart and gb, and whether anything could also be linked was answered finally, amongst many other useful bits of info.

ihaveayod · 23/09/2023 13:11

@dudsville So glad that it was all good.

CleanQueen123 · 23/09/2023 13:45

@ihaveayod it's so hard to know what to eat isn't it? You find your list of safe foods becoming increasingly small.

@dudsville that's great news. I haven't been offered a follow up appointment. They seemed to assume I'd call them if I had an issue with healing. All of mine seem to be doing well. The one on my bra line has a bit of a lump underneath but I'm also not really a bikini wearer so it's a very limited group that would see it!

Can I ask for some advice?

been dealing with this for about two months now. On the 3% per 100g diet.

I have several restrictions before this. I am dairy and wheat free. And have a broken bladder that food affects so there are a ton of foods out there that I cannot eat. And now even more so.

my question. After eating fruit , veg and meat most days I am only maxing out at about 900 calories each day. I’m not really hungry after I have eaten a huge meal of veggies pot and meat. ( I keep meat at 100g as that is all my gallbladder seems to cope with )
But I know that even though I have three stones to loose 900 calories isn’t enough to eat during the day. What do people do to add up their calories in terms of snack that isn’t fruit and veg etc. any help or advice would be really great.

I didn't if I'm honest @Bananas1350 which is most likely why I lost around a stone and a half and become anaemic.

I found it really hard to add calories without adding fat. But I did try to up my lean protein to keep me fullish.

ScribblingPixie · 23/09/2023 16:02

Rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat. I make them in a rice cooker and add in a little bit of different things like beans, veg, hard-boiled egg, chicken, sesame seeds.

ihaveayod · 23/09/2023 17:47

@Bananas1350 I had this discussion with my GP when she referred me. I am pre-diabetic so cannot fill up on the carbs, plus the low fat diet for my high cholesterol and gallstones. She just said that I should eat more low fat meat (ie chicken) and fish with lots of vegetables. The thought of just eating that every day is not very appealing at all. I don't need to lose any weight so I had the discussion to help me not lose any more weight. I have to be honest I didn't find her very helpful and almost dismissive.

Bananas1350 · 23/09/2023 18:32

@ihaveayod yup. I don’t do well with meat. So not wanting to add more. My doctor has been less than helpful either. People just tell me to eat more. But I have ibs as well. So it’s so hard. Feel like if I can find something to snack on. Then I can add a few more calories. Found some crackers that I could try. But I cannot find them anywhere in local supermarkets. Life was hard with food before this. And it is getting harder.

plus side I have a stone in a month. And have another three I can loose. Just don’t think 900 calories is enough. I have done about 800 today and I’m not hungry anymore.

CleanQueen123 · 23/09/2023 19:04

I found the same. At the worst point I was pretty much living on apples and rice cakes. Unsurprisingly I became anaemic and medical professionals just said "Oh you poor thing." No suggestion of what I could eat or recognition that it really isn't healthy to be so restricted.

dudsville · 23/09/2023 20:10

@Bananas1350 , i think your situation is harder than mine was, but what about dried fruit and porrige made with soy or nut milks? At the start i was having this with cinnamon and agave syrup. I dropped the syrup, but it was a tasty way of having a filling vegan meal. Do oats count with wheat intolerance?

Bananas1350 · 23/09/2023 21:17

U have to have gluten free oats. So ones that have not been in the wheat trucks as they normally transport them together. But the oats are too high in fat. They are over 3% of 100g of fat that I follow. And I’m keen to test the theory above that just yet of fear of making it worse.

also found out that the ultra processed food u get in the shops was making me ill. Feel like a new human since I stopped eaten sugar, crisps biscuits etc. so trying to now keep things as clean as I can. It was a nightmare before. And defiantly harder now.

sounds ridiculous as it’s a few stones left to worry about. But when happens when I hit a healthy weight. Will it just keep falling off me?

dudsville · 24/09/2023 05:32

I don't know@Bananas1350 , but for me, once i found out what i could tolerate then i just filled up on that so my weight was stable for the last while before my surgery. But I didn't have it as rough as @CleanQueen123 who couldn't tolerate anything so might say something different.

HeyBwoss · 26/09/2023 09:45

Hoping your surgery goes well (and ahead!) this week @Trollfeet

Thank you @HeyBwoss - no cancellation call so far…….Hope you are doing as well as can be expected.

Packageholiday · 26/09/2023 10:09

I'm surprised that porridge is fatty?

Bananas1350 · 26/09/2023 11:22

Just 50g of porridge had 3.8 g of fat in them. That’s before the milk added on. Way above the 3% per hundred grams

CleanQueen123 · 26/09/2023 19:55

I struggle with porridge regardless of gallbladder issues. Gives me horrendous acid reflux.

I found the Lidl microwave Middle Eastern grains filling and not triggering. I either had them hot with chicken/fish or I had them cold with chopped cucumber and chicken.

dudsville · 26/09/2023 20:02

I'm so shocked about plain oats!

Trollfeet · 27/09/2023 13:53

op all done, relief it’s over!

HeyBwoss · 27/09/2023 15:13

So please for you @Trollfeet! How are you feeling?

OP posts:
MiniCooperLover · 28/09/2023 21:21

That's great TrollFleet, hope you've had a good day and feel ok.

I've really pushed it this week and I don't really know why. I've eaten so badly (in the scheme of gallbladder). Today I've had the most stressful day in a long time and I was SO hungry and we had chip shop dinner! I had the tiniest portion but what was I thinking ?!? My DH Was looking too scared to challenge me 😂
