DS’s fear of spiders

Posting for traffic - I appreciate this likely belongs with the SEN threads. DS has significant speech difficulties.

I’m a bit desperate. Last week there was a spider on DS5’s pillow. DS usually likes spiders but was hysterical. I was very calm, picked the spider up, explained to DS it wouldn’t hurt him and popped the spider out the window. DS was not reassured by this. He’s been sobbing every bedtime since, and seems quite fearful. I’ve changed the sheets a few times in front of him, laid down in the bed with him, checked for spiders with him, been reassuring and calm, none of it has helped.

Any suggestions? We’ve just come back from a night away and DS saw a fly in his room, quietly and quite fearfully said ‘it’s a spider’ and ran from the bedroom. DH is currently sitting in there with him trying to calm him down. He’s so overtired, it’s taking ages to settle him even in our bed.

Really have no idea where this is coming from. None of us are bothered by spiders or make a ‘thing’ of them in the house, but it seems to be really distressing him. Unfortunately like I said, his speech is very poor and he’s not able to explain or talk through his worries 🙁

I just want the poor kid to get some sleep!

My DS also hated spiders. I “bought” some anti spider spray - basically a nice pillow sleep spray and made a big fuss about making sure we had sprayed the anti spider spray around, checking his room out before he went to bed etc.

He knew about fly spray so swallowed the idea of anti spider spray. I said it was a dangerous chemical so he wasn’t allowed to look too closely either!
