If you have a shy primary school DC…

Does their teacher actively encourage them to get involved in things or just leave them to it?

For example, my shy DS generally avoids speaking in public. He is however good at maths.

His school holds an annual Times Table competition for the top 2 years. He did not put himself forward to enter, and when he asked to join in it had already started and he was told he was too late.

I wondered if this is usual, or whether a teacher would normally actively encourage shy DC to participate? Especially in an area they are good at. I feel like his shyness is causing his school life to pass him by.

My DC’s teacher would definitely have tried some gentle encouragement to make sure everyone was included. But ultimately the teacher can’t force reluctant DC to join in.
