Phone case question

Pasadenadreaming · 17/05/2023 09:19

Quite a random question but it was sparked by seeing that meme that says something like all women of a certain age have a phone case that looks like a book (in other words one of those wallet cases where you can keep cards and cash too). Now I'm clearly 'of a certain age' as that's the type of phone case I have. I am just curious what people do without this - do you have enough pocket space to carry a separate wallet too? Or do you take a bag everywhere? I just like to grab this and go when I leave the house - it's got everything I need and I can't be bothered carrying a handbag. But I do like the look of the thinner phone cases too!

I’ve never had one of those phone cases. If I’m carrying a handbag my purse is in it. If I’m not taking a handbag I do put a debit/credit card in the back of my normal phone case as a back up to Apple Pay.
I had an uncomfortable hour in the garage after a car repair when Apple Pay didn’t work. It doesn’t always work. I had to wait to get a hold of my husband to give me a credit card number over the phone to pay.

Of that age , but use a bookcase cover as it saves the phone screen getting scratched when I chuck it in my bag , and protects it when I drop it . I see so many people with cracked phone screens , i think I probably keep my phone for longer than a lot of people before I upgrade it , so want to look after it .

ComputerInitiateJump · 18/05/2023 08:15

I love my book style case as when I'm sitting on my bed with my knees up I tuck the flap in between my knees and use my phone hands free.

My face and arse ages me more than my phone 😆

EversoDisorganised · 18/05/2023 08:32

I have three cards on Apple pay, partly for budgeting (personal vs house spends) and in case one refuses, the only time I have had a problem is when the retailer had a limit that was lower than I was spending, usually if doing “big” shopping I take my cards too unless I know the retailer will be fine.

I use glass screen protectors on my phone to stop scratches and a silicone case seems to protect it well enough from occasional drops. My last phone was in perfect condition at 5 years old when I traded it in.

musixa · 18/05/2023 08:50

I'm of a certain age and my phone case is one of those silicon ones that snaps onto the phone. Very dilapidated as I've had the phone for about 5 years in the same case.

I have a separate purse for cards and cash. Never put all your eggs in one basket!

cadentiasidera · 18/05/2023 09:11

I eventually caved and got a book style case after dropping my phone and breaking the screen one too many times! I'd also upgraded to a new phone which was bigger than my previous one (that's a whole separate rant about phones getting bigger unless you have an iPhone... If I wanted a tablet I'd get a tablet grr) so it doesn't fit in my back pocket anyway, so having a bulkier case doesn't matter to me. I turned 40 in January so maybe it's age -related too...?!

FoodFestfFork · 18/05/2023 09:26

Pockets? Well I never!

I generally pass on my last phone to a friend, I prefer a slightly ‘rugged’ grippy rubber case with a screen protector….. and my last phone goes to her in my case

Then at the earliest opportunity she replaces with a flip open wallet style.

She gave me a very good reason this time …. My phone on a table looks exactly like what it is, a current edition or last edition iPhone. Nice to distract and steal by the casual passing phone thief

Hers once she’s changed cover and when it’s on a table it looks like a crappy phone wallet
It contains a couple of generations old iPhone, still a bit stealable but not the number one priortity and could easily be the crappest phone ever

stillbejeweled · 18/05/2023 10:14

I have an irrational hatred of those phone wallets. They're really ugly and it's not an age thing but they do give me a (probably unfair) image of the person using it.

I've always got a bag with me and would never put cards in a phone wallet even if I carried one.

How do people manage without a bag. My friend puts everything in her pockets but I don't want my clothes bulging with keys, phone, purse, lip balm, paracetamol, pen etc

I'd have to wear utility trousers and they're worse than the flip case. 😄

I don't take anything with me but my phone and my car key. It doesn't make my pockets bulge.

If I'm travelling I take a small cross body bag

Pasadenadreaming · 18/05/2023 10:19

I can't bear dragging a bag everywhere I go which is why I've always used the wallet cases! If I was out for a whole day or off to some kind of event I would take a bag but if I'm just going out for a walk, up to the shops or to school or something I won't bother.

I just have the leather cover to protect the phone. I don’t keep anything else in it. I have a lot of cards and keep them in a nice big purse. I have always carried a bag or backpack, so it’s no big deal.

Netcam · 18/05/2023 10:30

I'm 53 and have always had flappy phone cases. I've dropped my phones over the years so many times and the flappy cases always seem to land closed, never had any damage. It also protects it from getting scratched in my bag. I take a bag everywhere, even if it's just a small bag for phone, keys, purse, inhaler, tissues, small water bottle. I find the feel of full pockets kind of annoying. I have quite a few mini backpacks and compact cross body bags for such purposes. But I'm more interested in function than form in this respect.

stillbejeweled · 18/05/2023 10:34

See for me, a bag is part of my outfit. I love bags and love using them.

I also carry too much crap but I hate being out and needing a pen or having to buy headache tablets or tampons.

EversoDisorganised · 18/05/2023 10:53

I take a biggish bag to work as I need to take diary and lunch, I also use a small cross body bag if I need to carry more than phone and keys eg nylon holdall for shopping or don't have pockets, but leaving the bags at home feels really liberating. I don't routinely need paracetamol, pens etc out of the house, literally just phone and keys and maybe airpods a lot of the time so minimal bulk in my pockets.

I have one of those "awful" phone book cases & wouldn't want anything else. 2 DC have same, 2 DC only have phone bumpers.

I'm terrified of breaking the screen. I tried but totally screw up putting on screen protectors, and people who I know who only have a screen protector + bumper occasionally mention they smashed their phone & need a whole new phone.

I've never smashed a phone.

lljkk · 19/05/2023 15:07

ps: assuming you have a screen protector, how good are they at preventing bad scratches on the screen?

Mine covers the screen so it's impossible for the screen to get scratched.

EversoDisorganised · 19/05/2023 16:54

Getting the screen protectors on can be a little fiddly but then they really do protect the phone from scratches. My last phone was as good as new when I traded it in after 5 years in a silicone shell case and glass screen protector. I tried a wallet case for a short while but it drove me mad flapping about and having to be opened every time you want to use your phone.

A glass protector stops scratches altogether

What did you do to get your account suspended? 🤨

Comefromaway · 23/08/2023 09:33

I've never had a fold over case, I just don;t fine them convenient. I do take a handbag everywhere but then again I'd have to anyway due to carrying things like inhalers, painkillers, antihistamines, emergency sanitary protection etc.
