Footing NHS Bill

Good morning

I am sick with worry right now, my father in law was admitted to hospital yesterday after forgetting to take one of his medications. He collapsed or fainted, not quite sure.

I know oversea visitors might be charged for treatments, my husband has completely ignored my concerns regarding the cost of this treatment which his parents will expect him to pay without question. We do not have the money to pay potentially thousands of pounds.

My father in law has a history of " forgetting" to take his medications and both him and MIL have no problems with their son paying for their treatment.

I can't think straight due to being afraid of how this will pan out.

Am l being unreasonable?

More context needed. Are they visiting you as tourists? Do they have medical insurance?

LIZS · 16/05/2023 09:29

Do they have health insurance? Might cover some treatment if so.

Yes tourists and no health insurance

Why is it down to your husband to pay ? If your given the bill simply say no you don't have the funds . They chose to travel without insurance so there problem .

My husband doesn't see it that way. He sees it as his responsibility. I am feeling that our marriage can't survive something like this.

Are they from a Schengen area country?

GayPareeee · 16/05/2023 09:37

Are they in the UK on a visa?

Pinkplasticbathcup · 16/05/2023 09:38

No, you are not being unreasonable and yes, there will be a bill. I’d be furious at being expected to pay it.

I cannot understand why they do not put conditions on tourist visas, so that you cannot enter the country unless you have adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay.

whowhatwerewhy · 16/05/2023 09:40

You need to tell your husband your not paying out money ( that you don't have) for his parents choices. Point out to him how strongly you feel, and yes he might need the chose between his marriage and parents.

They are totally unreasonable. I sure as hell wouldn't even try to pay their bill. Do they want to see their son made bankrupt or something?

The stupid fools travelled without health insurance so the stupid fools should face the consequences of that.
