What’s the matter with me? Where can find my old self, confidence etc.

Posting here for traffic…

I’m so lost, nearly 50 and despite working for 35 years, 30 of them in the same organisation I find myself scared to death of change.

Im at the last stages of hopefully a change of department that I desperately need, it’s doing tasks that I’ve done many times over the years but with far more responsibilities and there will be some learning.

I have to do a few short presentations for this interview, nothing too taxing but I’ve just spent nigh on 6 hours doing 12 slides.
I can’t focus, I struggle to know what to say. I’m on the verge of chucking it in.

Deep down I’ve lost all mojo for work, I’d like to retire, not take on more responsibility but I need to work, another 10 years at least so might as well make it in a department I like.

Can someone give me some motivation and confidence? How do you jump into roles you’ve never fully done before? Where do you get your ‘balls’ from? Self belief? Help!

No doubt about it- Change is scary…
Thinking about the presentation I bet you’ve had to train colleagues in the past - treat it like that, present it in that way - make it clear and simple Work to your strengths in it. Don’t overthink about the actual presentation. How long will the interview be in total?
I had to get a job in a field I’d never worked in before after my divorce. Hadn’t worked outside the home for a lot of years. My motivation came from really needing that job.
do all you can to find out about the new role.
Make sure you wear something you feel comfortable in for the interview.

Change is always hard, especially if you're not particularly used to it and quite comfortable. But you have to go through it to grow. Well done for doing this.

I know this is trotted out a lot but could your hormones (or lack of) be affecting your motivation and confidence?

You might not have done the new role before, but I bet you've done every element of it in some way in your other role. You need to focus on the skills you already have that you can transfer to the new one. E.g. If your new job requires you to make presentations but you've never done that, perhaps you've always shown new staff around the office.....well that's a presentation of sorts isn't it.

You've been in the company 30 years....you know stuff. Concentrate on the new role and how good you'll be at it.

I wish you luck. Give 'em hell!!
