Anyone join me in A and E?

My 77 year old mum has fallen and clearly fractured her wrist (looks displaced). Been in A and E for an hour and not triaged yet. Anyone want to keep us company? She’s in quite a lot of pain and has a heart condition so we could do with a distraction!

I’m so sorry to hear that. A broken wrist is super painful!

IpanemaChica · 14/05/2023 18:05

Ah sorry to hear that. My mum also broke both her wrists 3 years ago falling over backwards. She did recover but stayed with me for a week and I had to do everything including washing - we did laugh about it afterwards!

We now refer to it affectionately as ‘when mum did a back flip’ Smile

Hope you’re seen soon.

@IpanemaChica that sounds really nasty! glad your mum recovered, you sound like a lovely family x

@WonkyFeelings yes she is in pain, and she’s pretty tough so I’m guessing it’s quite badly injured.

Now triaged and waiting to be called through for an X-ray. Lad sitting next to us came in at 8.30 this morning with a suspected fractured ankle and was xrayed at 2pm and hasn’t had the results yet nearly 5 hours later. Is this normal now?!

It is the weekend though. Obviously you couldn’t wait.
We were in Exeter hospital in august for 10 hours for a broken wrist (DS) staff were completely apathetic.
Eventually i insisted on looking at the x-Ray myself and I was clearly fractured. Asked for a splint and off we went. 10 hours later! He was x-rayed in 30 mins.

Wishthiswasntthecase · 14/05/2023 19:38

hope she’s ok

my 77 year old mum who has a heart condition fell 4 weeks ago and fractured her wrist! Counting the days till the cast comes off. We were very lucky in A&E but she did fall at 3am! Hope you’re seen soon

Twinsmummy1812 · 14/05/2023 20:22

They’ve taken her into the plaster room to ‘reduce’ it. I declined to go in because I’m pretty sure I would pass out!

@Wishthiswasntthecase what a co-incidence! Fingers crossed your mum will be as good as new when the cast is off

Hi OP,

How is your mum today?

Twinsmummy1812 · 15/05/2023 14:16

Hi @WonkyFeelings thank you for asking. She’s staying with me for a few days until her appointment at the fracture clinic. She’s in a lot more pain than I expected but they had to manipulate it to get it back into alignment and they said one of the bones is curved (whatever that means!). I’m supposed to be going on holiday on Saturday so hoping all goes well at the fracture clinic and the pain reduces as the swelling does.

Just popped on to see how she was doing. My mum found the week after tough but things started to get better when the bruising and swelling went down. Fingers crossed it’s the same for yours.

blahblahblah1654 · 16/05/2023 21:58

Hope your mum feels better soon!

Twinsmummy1812 · 29/05/2023 22:17

Hi both. I’m so sorry I haven’t replied before, somehow my phone and iPad aren’t linked and I didn’t realise you had commented again. It’s a nasty break, they didn’t want to operate but were talking about an external fixation at one point but it seems to be healing okay in just a cast. She’s still in more pain than I would expect and it swells unless she keeps it raised but hopefully it will be better soon. @Wishthiswasntthecase i hope your mum is well on the mend x
