New Forest - best area for 2 night stay with an 8 year old?

I want to take my 8 year old away for a couple of nights to the New Forest and get an airbnb or something - but I know nothing about the area so would love any recommendations of where to look! He can’t ride a bike (special needs) and hates heights (so no Go Ape).

Will you have a car or use public transport?
You can drive to a few different places if you have a car.
Moors valley country park is good for 8 year olds and is free apart from quite pricey parking (though technically it's outside the new forest the 8 year old won't mind).

No idea on where to stay but:

New Forest Wildlife Park is nice
Then very nearby to that is Longdown Activity Farm.

Moors Valley has a nice walk through the woods if they would be accessible, plus a ride on train. Bournemouth is near to Moors Valley with a sea life place.

Lyndhurst would be nice and central.

but Lyndhurst is one big traffic jam in the summer and school holidays

That is a good point.
We are used to going through it mainly weekdays in term time.
Weekends are bad in summer.

Downton is tucked out the way too much. I would look at Lymington or Lyndhurst. Much more centred for things to do. I live near the new forest. Brockenhurst is a place to consider

We stayed in Lymington last year which we found good. Downton isn't far from there and possibly a bit cheaper. You're closer to the (pebbly) beach at Milton.if you want a sandy beach, Avon beach further west is good but we went on our last day, a Sunday, arrived about 11am and car parking was difficult.
There's a sea water pool at Lymington with an inflatable obstacle course. The wildlife park is good.
The traffic in Lyndhurst wasn't too bad when we passed through. It was slow but moving.

Which Downton?
The one near Lymington or the one heading towards Salisbury?
Neither are actually in the forest.

Sway is a great little village, Brockenhurst is also worth looking at, you might find somewhere which is looking out onto the open forest.

Will you have a car

Yes we’ll have a car. It would be lovely to be somewhere where we didn’t have to use it if we didn’t want to - and eat at local pub / fish and chips etc

The Turfcutters pub in East Boldre has lovely rooms that are in converted stables, right next to the pub. You are right on the Forest with ponies grazing nearby, the rooms have a fridge and microwave so you can do a bit of self catering eg sandwiches, cereal etc. The pub does great food and has a huge garden.
Have stayed there several times with DC and they have really enjoyed it.

Brockenhurst has a station if you wanted to use the train and is central. I prefer it over Lyndhurst. Lymington is lovely too and you could train or drive out to the proper forest. There are accessible walks. Moors valley is awesome.

Moors valley is great for kids, but not actually in the new forest. maybe you just want to go to dorset???? Mudeford would be nice as its near the coast and you could go to moors V. Or ringwood would be accessible to the coast, moors V and the new forest. good pubs and fish and chips in ringwood. the star has lovely oriental food and rooms and love italy has great food...espec pitza

Brockenhurst has this amazing bakery where you can get a lovely lunch meal deal - baguette cake and drink for about £3.50 I think and legendary in these parts!

Also butcher, greengrocer and 2 little supermarkets. I think 3 pubs in the centre and a wine bar and some other restaurants. So a good choice
Fish and chips on the beach in Milford on sea is nice, but it's a shingle beach, the sand starts at Highcliffe.
Lymington's got a little museum (st Barbe) just off the high street and of course the sea water baths which are a fair old walk from the town centre. Also you could get the ferry to Yarmouth (best to get train to lymington pier as it's quite a walk from the centre) and check out Yarmouth.

Also Paultons Park/Peppa Pig world isn't very far away if that's your child's thing.

Look at Lymington, Highcliffe for beach access or Milford on Sea for level seaside walks . Though beach access is a bit if a walk down the. Up again so might not suit your ds
If you want forest, ponies, local shops try Brockenhurst. There are some Airbnbs next to clouds hotel.

It's called the bakehouse I think, everything baked/made in the premises.

@tattychicken what would be your top things to do nearby ish if staying at the turfcutters?

Beaulieu motor museum, walk from Beaulieu to bucklers hard, take the oldest pier train in hythe over to Southampton, longdown activity farm and the new forest wildlife centre are all easy to get to from the turfcutters. And there are loads of walks within the new forest.

I live near the New Forest. My 9yr old finds Longdown Farm a little young now. Loves Paultons Park (it’s got a whole separate side with ‘big’ rides, so much more than PP world). New Forest Wildlife Park yes. Beaches yes. Lepe Country Park very nice with lovely cafe. Lyndhurst for lunch and walking around with the wild ponies (don’t pet or feed them). Lots of nice pubs. If you do head into Southampton the Sea City museum is meant to be good for titanic stuff (not been yet).

@AnnieSaxophone The pub is in a village right on the Forest, so perfect for Forest walks straight from the room. The children loved early morning walks in pyjamas and wellies, spotting ponies and deer. There's a lovely big pond a few minutes up the road, perfect for paddling. Often an ice cream van nearby too. 🍦

East Boldre is well situated for easy access to lots of the things suggested on the thread. Beaulieu Motor Museum is nearby, as is Brockenhurst where you can hire bikes. Pop over from Lymington to the Isle of Wight for lunch. Weird and wonderful witchy themed things at Burley, plus a delicious fudge shop.

If you're only there for 2 days, you only need to pick a couple of things to do. My children love above all else messing about in the Forest, clambering over fallen trees, splashing in rivers. You'll have a wonderful time.

I like Brockenhurst too. Lovely cafe, lovely pubs, lots of walking routes, plenty of horses and donkeys visit (but don't touch!). I've stayed there a couple of times. But I use public transport everywhere and it's good for that.
