WhatsApp - preventing messages

Hi
I don't really use WA except for a group linked to mum, which is important.

I've had a couple of missed messages from other people, which were actually important, it was luck that I saw them.

my question is, is there a way to set it up so people can only Whatsapp me if they have permissions? I googled and found some suggestions that don't seem to work.

thank you.

Just block the people on W/A you don't want to message you.

I don't think so, unless you block the number.

If you don't check it often and don't read the messages, the sender can see thay its unread. If it's really urgent, you'de think they would try contact you another way.

I think you can set it to "contacts only" but if you have them saved to your phone, they'll be able to message you.

I haven't given it permission to access my contacts either. I'm so confused. I hate Whatsapp, if it wasn't for mum's neighbours helping look after her, I'd never use it.

the missed messages were about an invoice I needed to pay. I think it's all automated so there's not likely to be a way to tell the company not to send messages.

I vaguely recall getting a message from an unknown number but I think I have solved that now.

also, is there a way to not allow calls on WA, or voicenotes? Thanks.

I think you are better off finding a new app or maybe getting them to text you.

But these are companies?

if you mean the neighbours, honestly if they didn't help me with mum I'd be stuffed, so I have to keep it as it's their preferred method.

People can only contact you on Whatsapp if they already have your number.

Why are you getting whatsapp messages from companies? (I don't get any, ever.)

Not everyone has Whatsapp, so they are taking a punt sending you a message that way. My whatsapp contacts are people who are already on my friends/ contact phone list. No one else.

All you have to do it use the Whatspp settings next to those messages and choose 'block this sender'.

You block their number just as you would if they had phoned you.

Redglitter · 13/05/2023 22:49

Uninstall it. That way people will have to use other ways of contacting you.

So, there isn't a way of tailoring it to ask permission, like it does for joining a group?

thanks for replies.

I can't find one, once you've downloaded it - anyone who has your number can message I think, you're either "on" WhatsApp or not.

Have you tried customer service at all to see if there's a way?
