Best supermarket sourdough

I have been getting a Tesco sourdough bloomer every week since I discovered it about a year ago. It's the one thing I look forward to everyday. They have now discontinued it so I am switching supermarkets, which isn't a bad thing as their prices are going through the roof. I went to Lidl this week but the sourdough I got wasn't nice. Can anyone recommend a good supermarket white unsliced sourdough that is made properly without yeast?

I have checked local bakeries and none stock it. We don't have independent bakeries where I live and online bakeries are just too expensive so it needs to be one of the supermarkets. Any suggestions?

M&s from the bakery counter but it's quite pricey.

Agree m&s certainly best one I’ve found but not cheap

M&S is nice, don't forget to pick up their fresh doughnuts at the same time. They are lovely!

M&S ones are lovely but they are shrinking.

Jason’s Sourdough is a good sliced option too

Another vote for M&S. Didn't know about the Tesco one being discontinued.

I like the dark rye one from Aldi. They also do a seeded and white one too. Comes pre-packed but is delicious with some avocado and an egg on top.

Not supermarket (although Ocado deliver it) but Gail’s Waste sourdough is amazing if expensive. I’ve had follow up emails for my last few Ocado orders saying it WS cheaper than Tesco, so if you shop carefully it could be viable.

Gail's at Waitrose is amazing

Biscuitea · 13/05/2023 09:35

Whatever you do, don’t get one from Sainsbury’s, it’s vile!

queenofarles · 13/05/2023 09:42

Be prepared to chip a tooth eating Gails sourdough!
I agree that M&S are the best supermarket choice out there , we get them regularly , we
also get great sourdough from a bakery ,
We get two sliced loafs and freeze them, they don’t last long , we consume a lot of bread here!
why not look at local bakeries where you live , they might have better options then supermarkets ones ,

JulieHoney · 13/05/2023 09:48

M&S and Waitrose are best for supermarkets.
Lidl is only ‘sourdough’ in some fantasy realm, it tastes exactly like regular bread. Sainsbury’s isn’t up to much.

Battlecat98 · 13/05/2023 09:57

Jason's is lovely, you can get white and malted and maybe another type. Its in Waitrose and Tesco.

Sourdoughhunter · 13/05/2023 10:57

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. There isn't an M&S or Waitrose near me but I will have a look at the online suggestions.

Tesco and most other supermarkets make fake sourdough which doesn't have the health benefits of real sourdough. Real sourdough takes much longer to make. If the bread has yeast in it, it is not real sourdough. It should only contain flour (preferably wholemeal), sourdough starter, water, salt, and perhaps some seeds or other natural ingredients like nuts. There should be no additives and definitely no yeast! Waitrose does make a real sourdough loaf, and possibly M&S.

This. have a couple of small bakers near me and it's £4 a loaf because it's handmade, left to prove etc.

If you are at home for one day a week
its the easiest thing in the world to make.
