How long will an un-iced sponge cake keep?

I’m making a cake but I need to make it after work. It’ll be a regular sponge cake then covered in buttercream. The problem is that I don’t think I’ll have time to make the sponge, let it cool and then ice it in one evening.

Can I make it on one day, ice it on the next and then eat it the day after?

24 hours before I start to notice a difference

Absolutely

Make it ahead and freeze it un-iced. Then defrost before icing and it will be fine.

I thought about that and then remembered that the freezer is full to bursting.

I think that's how I've made every cake I've made in the last few years. Will be fine, no need to freeze.

A relative of mine bakes cakes as a side gig and they often make the cake 4 days before, then just wraps in cling film and puts in fridge, until they decorate it and they are still fresh

As long as it's in an airtight container it will be fine.
