Smartphone in toilet

Hi all

My daughter's phone went weird this morning, after much coaxing she admitted she dropped it in the toilet yesterday morning. It seems to have lasted fine that 24 hours and then stopped working. It has been in rice since 9am. Is there any hope? And if not, what is the cheapest way of getting a new one as she is less than a year into a 2 year contract 😱 would taking out a new contract work out cheaper than buying a new handset? It is Samsung, if that helps. Any words of wisdom much appreciated.

I’ve found buying a phone off contract and going for a SIM only deal to be a much better bet, but it does depend on if your dds phone is covered by an insurance plan

bloodywhitecat · 12/05/2023 20:13

Have you checked your home insurance to see if it's covered?

Keep it in rice for a few days. Mine revived on day 3 so there’s hope.

I bought a second hand Samsung 22 recently for £450.00. I have a SIM only deal with Uw £12 a month unlimited everything.

Music magpie is really good for 2nd hand phones. This is where I went when I broke mine 13 months into a 2 year contract.

Insurance claim

There is hope! Keep it in the rice (inside a sock rather than directly in the rice) for a week and do not try and turn it on in that time. If it is already on just leave it. Fingers crossed!

I bought my Samsung A12, new, unlocked, £110 on Amazon in January this year

Years ago, I had a phone that went through a 40C wash cycle. I took the battery out and left it on a radiator for 3 days. After that, it worked normally!

Tesco do an Alcatel smartphone for £50. It is sim free so should work with her current sim and contract.

Thanks all. If I do need to get a 2nd hand one how do I get her details on it? Phones are so complicated these days I wouldn't even know how to get the back off 😳 sorry, in my forties buy may as well be 90 when it comes to this kind of thing!

She is with three, if that makes a difference?
