On Facebook it says I have a message in messenger but can’t find it anywhere. It’s not in chats/ message requests / chats / spam etc. it’s really bugging me. Anyone any ideas? Tried turning my phone off and going back in but it’s still there.

It's just yet another glitch, mine does it all the time now. Sometimes updating the app shifts it but it will be back! That annoying fake notification

smellysmellycat · 12/05/2023 18:49

Try going onto stories, that can fix it sometimes

Maverickess · 12/05/2023 18:51

Mine does this from time to time - how are you accessing messenger?
I have the app which I can click into directly and I can also click on the messenger icon on my FB app and it's messenger but seems like an older version, sometimes I see there's a message next to the icon and click on it and there's nothing there but if I open the messenger app there's a message I've sent to someone else in bold for some reason and it's that.
Sometimes I can't find it and I have to uninstall and reinstall or update FB or messenger and then it is usually a message I've sent registering as a new message for some reason.
Drives me nuts too!

This can be a glitch with either a waiting message not being shown to you or that you have seen all messages but the notification hasn’t been reset.
These can be ‘fixed’ by updating or reinstalling the app

But another cause can be messages from people you don’t know.
To identify any of those open your messenger, click on your profile icon, (or you may need to go to the settings icon)
Look for an option ‘message requests’

Within ‘message requests’ you should find two options:

1)people you may know - this should cover a message to you from a Facebook user that you are not friends with or have not ‘accepted’ a message from them

  1. spam - this could be Facebook spammers, or could also include groups / pages you have followed / liked and they are sending bulk messages

Accept / delete / block accordingly

Thanks. I’ve tried stories and I’ve tried message requests too. I think I’ve looked everywhere to be honest. It must be a glitch. It’s only on Facebook that I’ve seen it and it’s not on the messenger app.

Someone's reacted but not replied to a message. Open up your most recent conversations and it should clear it

Starsandrain · 12/05/2023 19:55

I’ve opened up lots of previous messages in the hope that it would reset itself but that hasn’t helped either. Thanks though

When I've had this its either been an old message marking itself as unread 🤔 a message in market place, or just a random first notification solved by signing out or uninstalling the app.

I get notifications when someone reacts to a message, maybe someone has added a heart or a smiley face to one of your messages since they read it?

Sh4rkAttack · 12/05/2023 20:30

I sometimes find that clearing notifications (ie not even opening the app, just clearing the notification on your phone) often resolves this.

Crimsonripple · 12/05/2023 20:33

I normally delete the app and then download it again.

itsmei · 12/05/2023 20:38

You need to login on the desktop and you'll immediately find the message. It may be a reaction to a sent/received message that's promoting a phantom notification.

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 12/05/2023 21:22

I had this and got rid of it by looking on the laptop. It was from a chat from a group I'm in

Starsandrain · 12/05/2023 21:36

Ah thanks. Can’t remember my log in details so will have to figure them out and try on the lap top. Thanks.
