How do you pronounce these?

Another thread has made me think. There are so.many words where I'm not sure about the pronunciation. I didn't grow up in the uk. Help me out please!

The letter "h" - I was taught to say aich in school (in a non English speaking country) but most people around me (in the Midlands now) seem to say haich.

Academic - I've got no idea actually. Is it "Akka demic" or "a caaa demic" does that make sense?

Thoroughly - do you stress the first or the second syllable.

Privacy - pree vacy with a short ee or pry vacy?

H depends on the country. I think it's aitch in uk.

Academic - stress the Ah. So AH-ca-de-mic.

Privacy. I say pry but some say prih-vacy

Actually maybe it's stress the DEM sorry. Not ah.

  1. aitch is generally considered the ‘correct’ way but there’s a lot of regional variation. Also a lot of snobbery around people who say haitch
  2. Aca-dem-ic. Not really clear what your second one is supposed to sound like
  3. stress on the first syllable
  4. pri-vacy with a short i is British English, pry-vacy is American English. But probably plenty of people in Britain use the US pronunciation these days.
