TikTok in school - should I talk to the teacher?

DC2 (in Year 4) has told me that at school today, some of the children in the class had free time on the class computers, and one of them put on a TikTok video of a song about suicide. I don’t know the precise details of the video, but DC2 also told me that he thinks TikTok should be banned, so it’s clearly bothering him.

DC2 says the teacher didn’t do or say anything about this - DC2 thinks that the teacher might not have noticed what this child on the computer was doing.

Would you say anything to the teacher about it?
I don’t know what video or song this was, but even if DC2 has got the wrong end of the stick about the song lyrics, surely a class of 8 and 9 year olds is a bit young for watching TikTok unsupervised at school?

Yes tell the teacher or the head teacher.
If you have an email contact address I would do it now.

@AtlasSeven Absolutely email now with TikTok viewed on school computer in the subject line. Explain what happened and what content was shown, who the child was etc. Keep it factual including that your son's reaction to it. School can check the history of any child's activity as they should have to log in to use a computer.

TikTok is a 13+ registration and should be blocked on school computers. I am surprised it isn't. I am sorry your son is feeling out of sorts having seen what he did.

Thanks for the advice, I’m composing a email now. I was a bit worried that the school would think I was overreacting.
Good point about the school being able to track the history of the children’s activity on the computers. I’m also surprised that TikTok wasn’t blocked.

No they definitely shouldn't think you're overreacting, this is pretty serious for primary school children. Defo should have been blocked on there as well, it is in most schools.

Yes, please do. Their firewalls need reviewing urgently.

LakeTiticaca · 11/05/2023 18:08

Ynbu. Tiktok should be for jver 18 only in fact I believe smartphones should be over 18 only or at least banned in all schools

Wow, their firewall must be fucked. I'm a supply teacher and invariably get a pupil laptop with a pupil sign in and almost everything is blocked!

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 21:40

How on earth has a year 4 managed to access TikTok in school. Apart from the fact they must have an account their firewalls are shit.

Isitthathardtobekind · 16/05/2023 21:47

100% yes tell them ASAP! Children should not be accessing anything like this at school. At this age, they shouldn’t be using it at home either.

Pinkflipflop85 · 16/05/2023 21:56

If a child has managed to get onto tiktok at school, then their safeguarding/firewall s are shockingly shit.
