Asking teachers and heads/deputies

I am looking for a primary teaching job as my maternity cover contract is coming to an end.

My current head won't release me to visit schools prior to application.

What can I do or say in phone calls to show I am serious?

Not getting interviews and I think it's because I can't visit.

Any help please greatly appreciated.

I’ve never visited a school prior to interview during the school day. I’ve made appointments for meetings after work but never asked for or been released for a meeting in a school day but have always been given permission to attend interviews where necessary.

I’ve only ever visited other schools after school-I wouldn’t expect to be released during the school day.

Visits help, but I’d look again at your applications. The quality and length of your personal statement is far more important. If you can’t visit do a bit of website stalking and try and find something unique about the school you like and can write about. Not everyone can/does visit, and I doubt that’s the issue.

I would doubt this is the reason. And I'm surprised you are not getting interviews - most schools are struggling to recruit. Perhaps revisit your personal statement/ask someone to check it? The most common reason for not getting an interview is a poor application.

@Halfull @WateryDoom
Would you both be willing to look at my personal statement please?

I have only visited at the end of the day after the children have left. You should be released for an interview.

You need to rewrite bits of your personal statement for each job you apply for, to tailor it for the particular school. EG key stage role, type of school etc etc. Read through the person spec and the job description for each job with a fine tooth comb and adjust your statement accordingly. I have a basic page outlining major things I’ve done/experience and then I adjust the beginning and end to the individual job.

I've never visited school prior to interview. I am secondary though.
