How to stop being annoyed by landlord stomping

My landlords live below me. He stomps so hard it sometimes rattled the windows (old house, no soundproofing). Sometimes he wakes up in the night and the stomping wakes me. Then he goes a few days without stomping, then it’s back to stomping again. Often the stomping is back and forth, very quickly. God knows what he’s up to that he needs to rush back and forth in their lounge (he’ll rush back and forth 5-10 times at a go). They have two floors of the house and the stomping up the stairs is the most intense stomping.

He won’t give a shit, he’s a very coddled older man. His wife waits on him hand and foot (though he looks like an egg in a wooly hat). Given he won’t change, any tips on being okay with it?

And the stomping is in addition to both of them not having indoor voices and they have guests over every single day. When it’s quiet I often wonder of they’ve died (but no, always turns out they’ve gone out). If they’re home, and awake, I know about it.

Move

Bonkersworknonsense · 09/05/2023 20:34

Well, I am moving as it happens, but in the meantime? They are always in, they only seem to go to the shops about once a week, and if they’re in they are shouting, stomping, and having guests who are as excitable as they are.

I feel your pain, we have shouty stompy door slamming neighbours, and will be moving next year. People like that don’t give a shit about neighbours and won’t change

Bonkersworknonsense · 10/05/2023 14:47

Thanks @LeefPeeper ! The stomping is so odd to me. When I was a kid apparently I stomped and my dad told me to cut it out - and I did. And we were in a detached house, so it was only annoying him.

On top of that there’s the constant stream of guests and excited loud talking. I was at a friend’s yesterday and we talked for hours, but at an indoor voice volume. Fine if my landlords are excitable people, but not when the walls are paper thin and the stomping and loud talking are a daily occurrence.

Got woken up this morning at 5:15 by stomping.

Hold on to the fact you won't have to put up with it for much longer.

Other than that - earplugs, white noise? Living in close proximity to other people is the worst.

Some people swear by noise cancelling headphones. A bit pricey, but worth it for peace of mind.

I’ve thought about noise cancelling headphones, but didn’t want to shell out for them. I find earplugs really uncomfortable but do play brown noise. The stomping gets through, but not the loud talkers.

The way someone put it was, "if I were to move house, I'd have to pay hundreds just for the moving van and boxes. So I bought the earphones instead."

I find the foam earplugs very uncomfortable but the wax or silicone ones are fine.

Cancel it out (or at least try to) with other noise - some music playing in the background etc.

You say he won't care or change. Is it worth trying and telling they're disturbing you? They may have no idea.

The Brothers Johnson have a song for these people.
