Hi all,

Was hoping for a bit of advice. I purchased a piece of furniture from next. It cost £850. I purchased online via my account but I paid via PayPal...the whole £850.
The item was returned and they have credited my account with £850!
I wanted it refunded to my original payment method because I need the £850 to purchase the furniture elsewhere.
Can Next actually do this??

Do you mean they’ve credited your PayPal account or bank account?

If it’s gone to PayPal, just log into PayPal to move it back to your bank account.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 06/05/2023 21:32

They've credited the Next account - so not really given the money back to spend elsewhere.

I think you need to call them.

KateyCuckoo · 06/05/2023 21:34

Is your balance now positive or did they credit your account still leaving a balanced owed?

I had this, just call them, they'll put the money back on your PayPal account.

Whenever I’ve ended up with a credit balance at best I’ve called them and they’ve happily paid it to me.

So the money has gone onto my next credit account. However I did not pay via my next credit account. I paid via PayPal and expect then when returning, the money always goes back to the original payment method.

I do owe money on my Next account. I pay it monthly, don't miss payments etc. Surely they can't just decide to use the money from a PayPal purchase and put it on my account. It's pretty much equivalent to me buying an item and being given store credit instead of a refund.

I have just emailed them, I was just panicking a bit and though if see if anyone here has had a similar experience ☺️

I wonder why they automatically credit your next account if you pay by a different method. It's basically like giving store credit instead of a refund.

Their live chat or phoning them will get it sorted much quicker I find

theemmadilemma · 06/05/2023 21:44

Annoying isn't it?

I've not challenged it, so interested in what they say, but it was a pain when it happened to me as I was in a tight spot and had expected a credit to my card I paid from.

Nomoreminieggs · 06/05/2023 21:56

It's too late for live chat (only just found out). Just putting my son to bed, so can't really call now (although may be too late for that). I will however catch them onive chat soon if I don't hear back.

It's definitely annoying as it's a lot of money.

Yeah I'd ring them tomorrow tbh

OK op I work for Next customer services and I am very sorry your refund was not refunded back to your original payment method.

This sounds like you had 2 accounts with Next, an credit account and a cash account.

The error has occurred that you used your credit account by mistake.

Don't worry you are we will refund the £850 back to your PayPal account. Due to FCA.

I hope I have now resolved this for you today.

shelbabab · 06/05/2023 22:36

They'll pay it back but you'll prob need to call them. It always goes back to your account as a credit as that's the normal process. It's an unusual one as u had already paid the bill so they need to do manually do something else to give u the money back.

Bizarre- why don't you respond to OP via the approved Next communication methods of email etc? How do you know which of your customers OP is? This is a bit scary.

porkchopsandwiches · 07/05/2023 10:02

OK just to be clear. The Op will still need to call or email Next and let them know what happened.

I was just trying to offer some reassures

There is nothing in the Op that identify them, for me to find their account information.

Nomoreminieggs · 08/05/2023 13:52

@porkchopsandwiches so Next emailed me today and are refusing to give me the money back.
Despite the fact I paid via PayPal they said because I owe money on my next account (which I always pay back monthly). That my money was used to pay my credit account and they can't refund me any other way!

I can't believe it. If never have ordered from them if I knew this. That £850 was to buy a sideboard that I want to buy elsewhere (I'm waiting for the refund) but they are refusing to pay me back.

Surely it's like me having a current bank account with (for example) NatWest and also having a loan with NatWest. Then when my wages are paid into my current account, they just take my wages and pay off the loan without my consent.

What am I supposed to do now 😢 that's a lot of money.

Annfr · 08/05/2023 13:59

Can you try to speak to PayPal?

I'd keep arguing with Next too. It's annoying but would sort itself out at the next billing statement anyway as you'd have to pay the bill that's now been paid? Incredibly frustrating but you won't be down overall.

Nomoreminieggs · 08/05/2023 14:03

@Annfr I returned the item, so I won't be paying the bill? Or am I misunderstanding. I wonder how it will work with PayPal. As I did PayPal pay in 3. If I've been refunded to my next account then that means I'll still owe PayPal the rest of the £850!

I had this problem with Next, it was a much much smaller amount and they wouldn't budge!! It was incredibly frustrating and it dragged on for ages!!

Nomoreminieggs · 08/05/2023 14:04

@gab254 😢 oh no. They reay need to make this clear. I thought they had to refund you to your original payment method. As I paid via PayPal, I should be refunded via PayPal.
