Exercise

Just been told I do too much exercise! And now I’m wondering if I do too much exercise? Im 47 and peri menopausal. I enjoy exercise and it helps me manage my stress levels. Each week I usually do two 5 mile jogs with DH for cardio, one Pilates class for flexibility/core, two or three weight sessions for muscle/bone strength. I have an office based job but walk to work, which takes 25 minutes each way.

PinkBuffalo · 06/05/2023 20:28

Do what makes you happy
I am similar have a desk job I am sat down for approx 10hrs a day it kills me

so i spend my evenings, weekends, days off in the gym doing about 2 hours of exercise a day (mix of hard cardio 🥵 and weights)

it probably is sometimes too much but it much helps me

Thankyou pink, it keeps me grounded and optimistic when life gets tough.

Too much in what way? Are you injured? Restricting calories and pushing your body too hard? Neglecting your family? Unable to carry out normal activities?

You're doing 5 or 6 workouts a week. Sounds normal to me but only you know what your friend meant.

Zuve · 06/05/2023 20:38

It depends on your health and age. Be joint friendly what ever you do and be kind to the body.

lljkk · 06/05/2023 20:38

What harm do you do to yourself by "too much exercise" ?

Gwdihooooo · 06/05/2023 20:39

You’re just doing too much for him… opinions are like arseholes: everyone has one.

Just ignore

SargentSagittarius · 06/05/2023 20:40

Why do you care what he thinks?

Does it work for you and your lifestyle? I assume the answer is ‘yes’, so …. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KatharinaRosalie · 06/05/2023 20:40

Sounds fine. We need to keep the muscle mass and just a dog walk is not going to do that.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 06/05/2023 20:42

I do roughly the same amount of exercise so not too much for me.

Gymmum82 · 06/05/2023 20:42

You don’t do too much exercise. That sounds normal and healthy. The problem is most people do too little and think that is normal.
I do 4 weights sessions 8 fitness classes and 6 yoga sessions. That’s probably too much but I enjoy it and I’m not injured so I’ll carry on

Thistooshallpass. · 06/05/2023 20:45

Someone said similar to me lately - I do 5/6 exercise sessions a week . Like you varied - weights , cardio, yoga .
The person telling me I did too much is overweight and does no exercise but constantly asks how I am slim .
I conclude that some people are jealous if you have discipline and or like exercise . It makes them feel bad about their choices .

Not injured, not restricting calories, not training particularly hard, do normal family or household stuff afterwards.

How much exercise does the person telling you that you do too much do?

Wishona · 06/05/2023 20:58

I average about 12 hours, this week will be 6 hours of yoga, 4 hours of Pilates and 2 of hiit.

I generally keep quiet in real life as I think people might think it’s too much.
It makes me feel good though, physically and mentally.

Flufz · 06/05/2023 21:05

I'm feeling much better after reading these replies and hearing how normal my exercising is.

Thankyou pink, it keeps me grounded and optimistic when life gets tough.

Same it keeps me sane the people I work out with are no just gym we support eachother and are a genuine family (I have no family so this big deal)

I glad you feels better, like I say you do what makes you Happy you no hurting no one and if it makes you feel more able to cope then go for it 🤗

Kyse · 06/05/2023 21:32

I'm overweight and do
2-4 x 30-45 min spin classes
Upper body weights 20 mins (aim for 2 classes usually do 1)
Lower body weights 20 mins (as above!)
2 x yoga/stretch classes of 20 mins
2-4 x 10 min lower body barre classes

So no, definitely not too much and I need to do more!

Sounds reasonable to me. What surface are you jogging on though? Jogging can put up to 7x our body weight on our legs and will prematurely wear out your knees in particular. Low impact is the way to go with cardio if you want to be able to move about well in your old age.

Ah that’s interesting. 50/50 off road/on road

Too much - multiple marathons every week

Jogging doesn't wear knees out - it's a
Myth

Football and twisting impact sports do hurt knees

Seems you are right! Thanks for saying which prompted me to look into it!

OP, your weekly exercise looks to be spot on, definitely not excessive. Excessive would be 5/6x cardio sessions a week/pilates (AM), 5/6x weight sessions a week (PM) and the 2 5 mile runs. Would your friend be less judgemental if you spent the time sat on the couch watching TV and stuffing your face instead?! 😆

StamppotAndGravy · 06/05/2023 21:50

Too much is when you're getting injured and are tired all the time, despite working and eating properly. The rest is just enjoying life! BTW, running is great as you get older, really good for joints, heart and bones. It can aggravate existing injuries though which is why people tell horror stories about knees. If you don't have joint trouble, it's completely fine, and even with joint trouble a physio can advise how to run safely.

produ · 06/05/2023 22:03

I thought too much cardio was bad for the knees/joints as we get older?
