Are horses just giant puppies then?

I have found a new route to take my dog for his evening walk, river on one side and a field on the other. There is a massive and I mean massive horse in the field and almost from the first time we went, he comes over and walks along the fence with us making little noises. Ddog is a gentle old lab with arthritis and has clearly fallen in love with said massive horse (I've decided his name is Major) and won't move until he's over at the fence and walks with us.

Tonight ddog dropped his ball over the fence and Major the horse picked it up, ran away with it, kicked it around for a bit absolutely living his best life, then brought it back and gave it back to ddog. Honestly never seen anything like it in my life, he actually gently gave it back to ddog. I have now also fallen in love with this horse. 🐴

So my question is, how do I keep a horse in a small house with barely any garden?

I love this. My old horse decided to keep one of my wellies as a toy, he even taught his friend how to pick it up and want it across the field 😆

That is LOVELY!

The thing with horses is that they're smart enough to have real personalities - and some are very puppyish.

Others are total wankers, I had a horse as a teen who would purposely go under low branches, or perilously close to a mill pond when I was riding him, because he knew I hated it. He didn't dislike being ridden, he was just an asshole.

countrygirl99 · 05/05/2023 19:51

My horse likes children. He's old and only has one eye now so is a bit nervous if I ride him on his own (those dparrows can be brutal). If I don't have anyone to ride out with I walk him out in hand through the village (he's not nervous then because he knows he can run faster than me so guess who would get eaten). If we see a child he stops so they can make a fuss of him. Now that may be because I give them a mint from my pocket to give him or it may not.

Some are just lovely and gentle. Some of them are murderous (I'm thinking of one I used to own) who would stamp on birds and drown rats in water buckets Confused

It's weird isn't it? When you get a horrid one. Even if you love them, they're still a ratbag.

I've had some lovely horses, friendly, soft, happy fellows, and one completely grumpy toad, who basically hated me and all I stood for.

@countrygirl99 my mare is incredibly gentle with children- she just seems to know. I wonder if she senses their innocence of intent

Pic of Major & his new bestie OP? Surely you have one? What a really lovely story ❤️

I think mine just likes a fuss. He's very pretty - the love child of Black Beauty and My Little Pony 😁

Shouldbehoovering · 05/05/2023 20:18

Mine used to do relay races around the field with his friend (and a stick they passed over!)

Ha this made me laugh. My friend has a horse who doesn't really like her. She's not horrible, she's had horses all her life, horse has a lovely life but he really isn't a fan of my poor friend. She perseveres with him believing that love will get him in the end.

That is so lovely! (I’m also enjoying the stories of arsehole horses 😁).

My DH kept telling me that he had made friends with a horse whilst jogging. He said it ran over and neighed whenever it saw him. I didn’t believe him until we walked his usual route. I t was so giddy to see him! No interest in me or the toddler when we visited alone (much to his annoyance).

Please don’t post a picture of someone else’s horse. I would be so annoyed if someone did this of my horse.

RandomMess · 05/05/2023 20:37

I was went on a horse amble whilst over in USA I had to explain that over here amongst the horsey folk a certain breed are referred to as shitlands, this was after they needed relying how naughty theirs are and they keep escaping out of their accommodation 🤣

WillowtreeHouse · 05/05/2023 20:45

I won't post a pic, not my horse ... Yet.

I've always loved horses but been slightly nervous of the sheer size of them and the lovely Major is an absolute unit of a thing but he's so sweet and gentle. With a surprisingly expressive face. I swear he looks upset when we leave because when I look back he looks sad and makes me feel terrible. 😂

Loving the stories of the wanker horses!

Sorry, not a horse owner, just a horse admirer. Please can you advise why this is a no-no? I don’t understand

''@Polkadotties · Today 20:36

Get over yourself.

If your horse is in a field/land near public footpaths then people are inevitably going to come across him/her and there is no reason why they should not say hi and take a picture.

LocalHobo · 05/05/2023 20:53

Ha! I'd love it if it were a pic of my old boy. Not that it will be... he is very unphotogenic.
