Sofa - what colour?!

I was super excited to get a new sofa and have been planning on getting a mustard yellow velvet sofa.... alas, I've suddenly started seeing them everywhere, including in my neighbours house, my best friend's house and every single shop in the land. I thought I was being original.... clearly not. Whilst I still love the colour, I don't want to have the same sofa as my lovely neighbour or my bestie. What is the new mustard yellow?! (And if you think mustard yellow is gross, sorry. It is very similar in colour to a newborn's poo. But I like it! Just not enough right now)

I fell in love with a red velvet sofa as a student. By the time it came to buying a sofa, I had a baby on the way and didn't think that velvet was very practical. So, I bought a red sofa in a more hard-wearing fabric and have never regretted it. In fact, I had the sofa re-covered in a different red fabric a few years ago, so it's over 20 years old now!

I’m thinking maybe teal? Ohhh red is amazing and I love that you didn’t regret ❤️

Dark green? I have a plum coloured sofa that’s around 20 years old and I have never regretted it either. It’s lived in several different houses and looked great in all of them.

I remember as a small child a mustard yellow velvet sofa my parents had since the 70's. It was a vile thing!
I'd like a navy or royal blue sofa, but not velvet as that yellow thing scarred me!

QuintanaRoo · 06/05/2023 17:57

I think velvet are a bit dated to be honest.

Givemecoffeeplease · 07/05/2023 21:55

Velvet is def old school, but it's so good with the dog and the kids! I love teal too. Great shout. And deep plum is lovely.

I personally think you're better off going for a lighter, more neutral colour, and then using an accent/bold colour in the form of cushions or throws. That way it's easier to change when you get bored/fancy a different colour scheme. We've got a light grey sofa (I know grey is so overdone) But you barely notice the colour of the actual sofa, as we have lots of orange and blue cushions, and accents in the room. I love bright colours, but with a large piece of furniture like a sofa, I think light and neutral always looks best, and lasts longer.

We have an olive green velvet sofa and navy blue velvet armchair….

I’ve got this coming on the 25th May and can’t wait. I love green !

I second going for something neutral and using cushions for colour. We bought a green velvet sofa about four years ago. I loved it for six months then went off it but had to live with it for ages. You don’t get bored with bland neutrals and changing cushions when you get bored of your chosen colour scheme is cheap.

OopsItsAPony · 07/05/2023 22:27

Sorry incognitodorito! That was bad timing. Your sofa looks lovely. A much more muted and soft green than the one we had.

incognitodorrito · 07/05/2023 22:32

@OopsItsAPony I can’t afford to get bored of it for the next 15 years so will potentially need to be switch it up with cushions a lot ! I really love green so hoping all will be well.

Loria · 07/05/2023 22:34

I think if you love one, buy it. Things get popular because we're all chiming into the same culture around us. It's really not a bad thing.

I bought a teal sofa 2.5 years ago and I still really love it. Yes it's a strong colour and yes it's of its time but well I'm of my time too. I saved up for it for months, looked forward to having it for weeks and it still makes me happy all this time later. It looks different at different times of day as the light changes and as I change other things in the room.

If you have found a mustard one you love, buy it. No one is going to see yours and your friend's side by side. You've got different houses!

CrispsnDips · 07/05/2023 22:39

incognitodorrito ..that’s mine ! Absolutely LOVE it!

Heartofglass12345 · 07/05/2023 22:48

I have a purple sofa but I would also go for teal FlowersSmile

Heartofglass12345 · 07/05/2023 22:48

Oops I didn't mean to send you flowers then but never mind, here you go haha Flowers

Loria · 07/05/2023 23:20

I can't find a picture of my exact sofa - it's from one of those manufacturers where they have a few different models and you get to choose the colour/fabric type/legs etc. This is a gold version of it though. And mine has wooden legs.

OP might you go for gold? (Like the old quiz show?)

Go for an IKEA one that you like the shape of. There's loads of companies now that make covers for them in all sorts of various fabrics and colours.

You could buy two or three covers and switch it up if you get bored!
