Absolutely kicking myself... Damaged Ipad.

Ds2 is autistic and dyspraxic. (He doesn't live with me) He had a new Ipad bought for him by my Mum last year when his old one developed a bulge in the battery. I carefully took out insurance which was sent to me. I signed it and sent it back...
Last night he knocked water onto it and rang me and woke me up to tell me.
I've checked the insurance and accidental damage isn't covered. I can't afford to buy a new one and I'm not sure Mum can. He has contents insurance but that will take ages to sort out and he needs another one straight away as its his main way of communicating! I wish I had checked the insurance before I signed the documents..

Is it worth going to a computer shop, some of the smaller independent ones can fix a lot of damaged devices fora small fee.

Is there an iSmart shop in your area? They specialise in repairing phones and most likely can fix iPads.
Or go to an Apple Store and speak to staff. They are very helpful and understanding.

I'm going to ring Curry's as soon as they open and see what they say... I've rung a work colleague and she's going to cover my shift... Feeling very tired now.

First of all don't use it/ turn it on off/ use buttons until you can get it seen or at least 24 hours. Wrap it in kitchen paper and put it in a bag of rice.

You don't want curry's. You want a small independent computer or phone shop.

Go to the little phone repair shop type places. Currys will do nothing.

Elderflower14 · 05/05/2023 06:26

Curry's is where I bought it from.. Thanks for the replies..

Apple store are really good if you can get to one. You will need his apple ID.

If it's just water it may well be ok when it dries out. As others have said, put it in a bag of rice until you can get someone to look at it; don't press any buttons on it in the meantime. I agree that a small place is probably better than Currys, but you might as well start at Currys if you bought it there.

IPads are fairly waterproof, in my experience - has he actually seen that it's not working? Or did he just spill water on it and then assume it was broken?

If you do need to replace it, can you afford a secondhand one? Or a secondhand Android?

SiblingFights · 05/05/2023 07:34

Yeah don't go to Currys. They won't do anything. The warranty won't cover accidental damage.

A little phone repair place is your best option, put in rice until you get it there.

Also check your home insurance, mine covers accidental damage to electrics.
