Abbreviations

Does anyone else dislike abbreviations? I have always hated abbreviations, for example, ‘prep’ instead of ‘preparation’ - it makes me feel jittery.

I recently started a new job role and it involves typing notes. It is quite a heavy workload and I am very slow. Everyone uses abbreviations, I guess it makes typing faster. I just can’t bring myself to do it. I have tried and then I feel jittery and have to go back and re-type it. It is really stressing me out. If I could type the notes in the same way everyone else does I would probably be quicker at my job.

Is anyone like this?

Haha, no I love them and I’m very guilty of using them all the time.

I'm fine with them provided that it is clear what they are.

Some you would just use anyway as they are part of the national consciousness. For example, for BBC you wouldn't put British Broadcasting Corporation. For ITV you wouldn't need to type Independent Television either.

I struggle a bit with new abbreviations though which are less well established.

Well, sounds as if this is something you’ll need to get past, if you’re to function at the level necessary?

Yes, I am fine with acronyms like BBC as long as the letters are capitalised. I couldn’t write ‘bbc’ but people at work never capitalise anything either!

Quite possibly @Outgrabe but I don’t know how. It is like a compulsion and I feel very uncomfortable writing fast, abbreviated notes full of grammar and punctuation errors.

Grammar and punctuation errors are another thing entirely! And I can’t not capitalise…

I can't stand "meds" instead of medications.

ApplePiePie · 04/05/2023 20:21

Me neither @ArcticBells glad it’s not just me.
