I have recently moved to a smallholding and had a couple of wild ducks move in. It’s making me think I need ducks. But I don’t have or particularly want a pond. My neighbour used to have ducks and said a couple of troughs (1 shallow, 1 deep) would be enough. Is this true or do I need to dig a pond?

Three for now, but another batch is due next week. They don't have names. We already have runner ducks and khaki Campbells, but these are Cherry Valley ducks.

Oh I love runner ducks they are my favourite duck

So cute. We have a nest in our garden with 8 eggs in it. Hoping they all hatch OK but we are quite far from water.

RSPB website said they can walk up to 2 miles to a pond or stream so I'm sure the parents know what they are doing. Pretty nerve-wracking though.

DD has named the parents Lucia and Tim which are excellently random names.

We are farmers (or crofters, but it's basically the same thing). My husband has sheep, but I'm allergic to wool, so I keep ducks. And hens. And Turkeys. Oh, and some quail. We sell the eggs, but mostly they just give us huge pleasure.
