Advice about hair with pic

I'm 51. I have had long dark hair since school. Obviously I'm going grey now. I don't really want to cut off my long hair. I was hoping for silver hair but it's very salt and pepper and wiry on top.

Should I use a purple shampoo?

Please don't suggest dyeing. That's a definite no for many reasons.

If you don't want to dye it, you should use a shampoo/conditioner especially for grey hair and just make sure you have it trimmed regularly for maintenance.

I have a couple of greys (so far) and remember being quite shocked to discover they were different in texture 😆

Shampoo for grey hair but I would cut quite a lot of personally, you'd still have loads left. Fab, I like the colour !

Greylag · 03/05/2023 14:34

Can someone recommend a purple shampoo?

I don't have any recommendations for purple shampoo but your hair is gorgeous!Maybe trim it a little, that's all I do to mine occasionally. But long hair is beautiful. For some reason we are expected to cut our hair as we get older but I think that's ridiculous. Long hair is beautiful!

ThreeRingCircus · 03/05/2023 14:54

I think it looks gorgeous so all I'd do is get a good trim at the hairdressers and wash it with a shampoo and conditioner specifically for grey hair.

My3cents1 · 03/05/2023 15:02

I don’t think you have enough grey to warrant a purple shampoo. Go for Oribe Silverati. Yes, expensive for shampoo but it works wonderful for natural grey hair texture. I’m fully silver/white and it’s a must in my bathroom.

Swishhh · 03/05/2023 16:18

I think it would look really nice with about six or seven inches cut off the end. Half of the length will have grown back in 6 to 8 months and I think it would look nice without the brown length.

coxesorangepippin · 03/05/2023 16:20

I'd leave as is

you're very lucky

brownbeauty80 · 03/05/2023 16:20

Probably not the advise u need/want but once a month I condition first then use shampoo..
it's called reverse washing and it works wonders...
shocks the hair into behaving...

Your hair is fab - great volume!

I would try one of the blue toning shampoos recommended for brunette hair but that are also good for grey

Fanola, Fudge or Redken are good

whitesnowflake · 03/05/2023 17:13

I second Fanola.

tatyr · 03/05/2023 17:18

I also think your hair looks gorgeous as it is! I guess the silver will come in time!!

StillMedusa · 03/05/2023 17:22

The silver will come. I was hoping to be a glorious white when I stopped colouring mine, but alas... salt and pepper it is; but every year it's a little whiter :)

I don't find the purple shampoos do much to the colour tbh...I've tried loads. The only thing they DO do is counteract any yellowing..I use GHDs to straighten my annoyingly fuzzy hair so use it to stop that.

Amiable · 03/05/2023 17:54

Wow, your hair is gorgeous! As PP suggested, maybe cut off a few inches, and do a regular deep conditioning treatment, but other than that, I suggest nothing!

Modda · 03/05/2023 19:06

Purple shampoo isn't great for grey hair in my experience.

I went down the dye route. It looks and feels in much better condition than when I just did the purple shampoo.

SnappyDragony · 03/05/2023 19:06

Embrace it, it looks fabulous how it is. Or if you don't wanna dye it get some highlights

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/05/2023 19:08

Its beautiful. Just stick a deep conditioner on and maybe tidy up the very bottom inch or so.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 03/05/2023 21:25

Mine is silver and I use purple shampoo (just cheap stuff, often Pantene stunning silver or Provoke touch of silver).

It doesn’t alter the colour, but my hairdresser commented that it was lovely and shiny and said that was the purple shampoo

mine gets lighter every year. Cannot wait for it to be white 😀

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 03/05/2023 21:26

oh and you have gorgeous hair
