child benefit age 18

DS is in final year of 6th form, turns 18 in August, then hopefully going to university.
Will his child benefit automatically stop when he turns 18, or do I need to tell someone?
I've tried googling but can't seem to find the information.
Thanks.

No. It will last until 1 Sep (year of completing sixth form). You should have had an annual form where you put in what sixth form they were in and anticipated completion month/year. Or an email to update it online through your Gov Gateway acct.

You can even get child benefit for a 19yo in sixth form. The same for them, it ends 1 Sep of year of completing sixth form.

It’s only when they turn 20 that child benefit ends the month after their birthday month no matter what sort of education they are in.

I’ve been meaning to find this out too, thanks for starting the thread! I guess the same principle applies to maintenance from my ex.

Too, if your child takes 3yrs to complete sixth form due to illness/injury where they are on a temporary medical leave of absence for even most of a school year this is not counted as “leaving education” and does not need to be reported to stop child benefit. Encountered several cases of Long Covid and this question came up a lot.

It will stop in September, no need to tell them.

It'll stop in September.

Further education is different to higher education so Uni isn't included. Also look at prescriptions and dentists costs as well.

Free prescriptions last until your 19th birthday if over 16 and in full time education.

It will end, 31st August.
