All I remember about it is that a girl gets a ring for her birthday, around her 16th I think. When she puts it on she has the ability to hear other people’s thoughts.
I think when she slips the ring on she hears her stepmother “saying” about how ungrateful she is.
I can’t remember if it was a short story or part of a longer book, I will have read it 20+ years ago.
