What ate our cat food??

We feed our cats on pouches which we buy in the big boxes of 40 and which are on a shelf at shoulder height. We feed the cats in the garage and the door is always slightly open so they can get in and out of it. Cats can fit under it but a dog couldn't.

Came down this morning and something has eaten at least 10 packets of cat food. They have been pulled them from the box and are scattered about the garage. Some of them have been torn open pretty effectively, others have just been hacked at.

What the heck could have done this?? I'm thinking possibly a rat?

Rats? Birds? A hedgehog with sharp teeth? 😂

We had food outside for our cats over the weekend when we were refurbishing the utility room - I looked out of the window to see a pair of magpies on the ground pecking at the bowls, they seemed to love the cat food!

underseige05 · 03/05/2023 08:17

Definitely rats. My dsis had rats while she was having an extension built. (they came off the back field)
They were stealing full boxes of cereal and pasta

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 03/05/2023 08:19

Rats or squirrels would be my guess.

Errrrr possibly my cat Blush We had to change our cats food last week because of dental issues, he's not happy and been bringing home sachets of Felix from god knows where multiple times a day since.

Hunter gatherer mode activated 😂 😂 I love that your cat is trying to show you what they're missing 😂

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/05/2023 08:23

A baby fox possibly.

Bumdealoftheweek · 03/05/2023 08:24

Pretty sure it's not a bird. No sign of feathers and the packets are stacked in the box on its side in 4 different compartments. Whatever it was went back multiple times. A hedgehog wouldn't be able to reach the shelf. It's freaky that some of the packets look like they've been opened by a human. It's also scared my cat as she keeps going to the garage door to look out.

A baby fox possibly.

Baby foxes at this time of year are still cute little teddy bears. It takes another month until they turn into rapacious vandals who will steal anything not locked down, ruin every green thing in your garden and expect their parent to lavish them with playthings like shoes, takeaway containers, towels and socks.

I absolutely love your cat "burglar." Cats are notorious for raiding other cat's food bowls, but yours takes it to another level. Please post a picture.

Seeline · 03/05/2023 08:39

I would have thought a fox would be most likely.
They are very strong and can get into quite small spaces. Has the door been opened wider?

SoupDragon · 03/05/2023 08:43

You say a dog couldn't fit under it but you might be surprised. My spaniel wriggled underneath the stair gate across the kitchen door, a gap of about 4 inches.

a fox would get through a smaller gap.

Flavabobble · 03/05/2023 18:51

I have to resort to locking the cat food sachets away because my cat will help himself. If he sees a box he'll be trying to get several sachets. He's adept at shredding his way into them but the worst thing is he'll puncture a few without you realising.

Elieza · 03/05/2023 18:56

You need a robust plastic box to keep em in. Or keep indoors. You don’t want rats.

Id be putting a blink camera or something i there and seeing what triggers it first though.

They've probably got him on a special shoplifter list at Tescos :-)

EatTheDamnCake · 03/05/2023 19:00

We have had a lot of foxes where we live and they have been tearing into all the bins 🤢. Could be them

DarkHollowTree · 03/05/2023 21:09

My cats an absolute bugger for this! If pouches aren't kept somewhere inaccessible to her she'll chew through multiple pouches and leave them scattered about my flat! Sneaky little shit!

abasketcase · 05/05/2023 20:22

Checking in for an update- worked out what it was OP?

Toomanylatenightprogs · 05/05/2023 20:25

Fox. Belly crawl under the door.

abasketcase · 07/05/2023 09:42

I can't believe OP never came back with an update!

Ha ha, we used to have neighbours with a lurcher that used to arrive home with full joints of meat, still hot from the oven sometimes.

Notfeelinglikemyselftoday · 09/05/2023 19:23

We also found out he regularly nipped into our old local pub for a saucer of cream on a Friday night. His lack of boundaries are fairly notorious.
