If you’re late 40’s what do you wear?

I’ve completely lost my way. Started during covid where I bought most of my clothes from supermarkets and now I have no idea what to wear and tend to wear jeans (skinny) and a jumper most days. I’m around 5’8” and size 10. I need casual clothes more than going out things and don’t need to get dressed up for work.

Well I have ditched the skinny jeans a while ago and now wear wide trousers - either jeans or other. Then a nice pretty top - especially if I wear jeans. Going out a dress - either to the knees or midi. Black boots in winter and yes the obligatory white trainers/plimsolls or sparkly gold flip flops in summer. Shorts and t shirt when the weather gets nicer.

49 and am in a denim pinafore, striped top underneath and DMs!

Not fashionable but never have been!

ChocAuVin · 03/05/2023 07:29

Recently got a pair of skinny leg flares that I love. They are everywhere if you search online! Mine were half price from River Island as an experiment but now I will shop for more.

Like PP I wear wide leg trousers too and — gasp — I sometimes still schlep around the house in my skinnies.

I’d recommend looking at the Kibbe ID system and your seasonal/tonal colour analysis to really nail your style. It has revolutionised my shopping!

More than any other combination, I tend to wear joggers/harem trousers with a long sleeved t-shirt and a band t-shirt over that. Usually high tops, sometimes DMs.

Gherkingreen · 03/05/2023 07:33

I'm 5ft 11 12/14, late 40s. I wear boyfriend jeans as they suit my shape, with merino jumpers (Uniqlo) or boat neck jersey tops.
I wear wide-leg trousers with trainers and love a stripey top or bright sweatshirt.
Winter I have a navy wool Reiss mid-thigh length coat and I have a few different casual jackets (denim/jersey blazer/bomber) for warmer weather. Love a chambray shirt with white underneath.
I try to wear natural fibres as much as possible as I get too hot in man-made.
I suit less fussy/frilly/flowery stuff so dresses/jumpsuits are in solid colours with chunky trainers or low heel/flat boots.
Not going to set the world on fire but I think I dress well (quality over quantity), and I feel good in what I wear.

Harem trousers with fitted top
Hoodie with leggings
three quarter length cargo trousers
wear ankle boots or trainers

Same here. I feel quite scruffy though. I just can’t be dealing with being uncomfortable. Since covid I don’t think I’ve worn a proper waistband. 🙈

I pretty much live in trackies, leggings, sports kit when I’m not at work! I have a pair of dark navy jeans and a pair of jeggings (so unfashionable now I believe) and a couple of long sleeve T-shirt type tops for dress down days at work or rare weekends that don’t require gym kit.

Cupoftea80 · 03/05/2023 07:57

I still wear skinny jeans- I think they suit me! At a staff inset day at school recently quite a lot of the cool young things (in their 20s) were in skinnies so I don’t think they’re over yet.

I do have a couple of pairs of mom jeans that I sometimes wear with a shorter top tucked in, but I really had to shop around to find some that suited me. I’ve also just started wearing dresses again now the weather is a bit nicer, or midi skirts with a jumper.

MintyCedric · 03/05/2023 08:02

I got into terrible habits in the pandemic and have since become self employed wfh so my wardrobe tends to be:

Harem pants & 3/4 sleeve t-shirt (WFH)
Jeans & shirt for leaving the house/client meetings
Leggings and a tunic if I have to posh it up a bit

I very rarely go out socially but I have some dresses I can dust off for that if necessary.

illiterato · 03/05/2023 08:05

Today- Boyfriend jeans with a turn up, Vejas ( yeah I know- mum uniform), dark grey t shirt over paler grey long vest ( so length layered), blue print scarf and light military style jacket.

in summer I wear denim cut offs or maxi skirts. I live in a beach resort so it’s that sort of vibe.

i also love my ugg ultra minis and a good cardigan. I have an extensive scarf collection.

SmileyClare · 03/05/2023 08:16

I still wear skinny jeans

Same! Mine aren’t going in the bin anytime soon! It rains a lot here at this time of year, I can’t be doing with wet denim flapping around my ankles. Also love turning my skinnies up and wearing with plimsoles or flip flops.

I find it quite hard to dress in the spring as the weather is so changeable though- layering a vest, long sleeved top or thin cardie a lot at mo. I’m a sucker for a white top and dark denim skinnies.
Have some black patterned cigarette trousers I like to wear with a fitted top, denim jacket.

I like quite classic clothes and dress them up with jewellery, thin bangles, a necklace etc. Nothing wrong with supermarket clothes! I buy all my basics- vests, long sleeved tops there.

Gym kit for work.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/05/2023 08:17

I think it's fine to stick with skinny jeans if you like them but you could consider 'mom' [hate that term tho!] or 'boyfriend' style jeans.

I think wide-legged trousers work great - you can dress them up quite easily but easy to wear with a t-shirt / runners too.

I think start with some new basics & see how you feel with those.

coodawoodashooda · 03/05/2023 08:17

Leggings!

Mammalamma · 03/05/2023 08:45

I still wear skinnies, wider leg ones just look odd on me but I’m really short

willowstar · 03/05/2023 08:53

Heading in to work in the office today...wearing Oliver Bonas long funnel dress with black Gabor knee high boots (my feet are fucked, hence Gabor) and a black fake leather jacket thing on top. I am overweight and don't feel good but need to wear something!

If I had a different body shape I would wear far more trousers. I love the slouchy trouser suits at the moment. Just look silly on me.

Ndd135632 · 03/05/2023 08:56

Lots of harem pants going down?

middleager · 03/05/2023 09:03

I wear the clothes I've always liked (Indie/60s).

I lost my way in my early 40s and felt that I stood out too much on the school run, that I needed to conform, but it just wasn't me.

With 50 looming, I'm back in my DMs, cord pinafore, polo necks etc. I like Joanie, Joe Browns, but also buy lots from Charity and New Look.
