Where do all the odd socks go?

Iloveabaconbutty · 02/05/2023 07:10

Just that really. We have a regular pile of about ten clean single socks by the washing machine some of which have been there for months.

Their partners have never turned up or seem to be anywhere that we can think of. We have searched everywhere. They seem quite literally to have vanished off the face of the earth.

There has to be some logical solution but it beats me what it is!

@Iloveabaconbutty due to this thread and my shame at having 70 odd socks (some from when my youngest dd (25) was in primary school), I've chucked the lot out! The freedom!

Gingernaut · 03/05/2023 16:50

They use static 'cling' to hide down trouser legs
They secrete themselves in the corners of duvet covers and pillow cases
They hide in and around the machine drum
When you're not looking, they slide out of view under the machine, under wardrobes and chests of drawers and wait for an opportune moment to make their escape
They tantalise any pet into playing with them and then they get scutted under heavy furniture and fridges

@MidgeHardcastle I'm really glad to have helped in some small way by posting it. Although I hope this isn't the point at which all their partners begin to turn up! I'd feel awfully responsible! 😂

They have set up a ménage a trois with the teaspoons and the spare front door key.

Bittercup · 03/05/2023 18:31

Do you have teenage boys in your house by any chance? 😁

MidgeHardcastle · 03/05/2023 18:32

@Iloveabaconbutty 🤣

ShowOfHands · 03/05/2023 18:39

This makes me so angry/frustrated. I've got 17 odd socks ATM. I have genuinely started counting them into the machine and then out again and screeching with unbridled rage when another one disappears. Nobody else chez Show cares. They reserve ire for global warming and political travesties but oh, THE FUCKING ODD SOCKS!

Where are they? WHERE? 🤬😡😕😵‍💫

postwarbulge · 03/05/2023 18:39

You can't through odd socks away. If you do, the other member of the discarded pair will turn up.🙄

Iloveabaconbutty · 03/05/2023 18:52

@Bittercup Well we've got four kids - one boy and three girls, late teens-early twenties, two at home all the time at the moment and two at uni and home half the year, so yes, that fact, plus the two of us, probably accounts for a lot in the vanishing sock department! 😂

Apologies @Iloveabaconbutty my filthy mind was wondering if they could be found under his bed!Blush

LindyLou2020 · 03/05/2023 19:35

MichelleScarn · 03/05/2023 12:02

And kirby grips!

And paper clips and biros.......

TheDogsMother · 03/05/2023 19:50

They turn into wire coat hangers.

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 03/05/2023 19:52

The other day I found 10 single socks under my son's bed.

They become tuppware lids I'm convinced!

This!! 😆

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/05/2023 20:31

They're actually aliens 👽 in disguise & go home when they've finished their mission.
Btw teaspoons & forks are aliens too hence the reason some of them go missing

They become tuppware lids I'm convinced!

🤣😂 this would explain a lot

BHRK · 03/05/2023 20:35

My washer eats them! I too now wash mine in a laundry bag. No more missing socks!

reluctantbrit · 03/05/2023 20:42

No idea but after DD (16 and same shoe size) and I emptied our sock drawers we ended up with 17 single socks looking sad and desperate for their partners.

Nothing, nil, zilch despite emptying the whole laundry basket and the rest of the wardrobe. They never go into the same wash as the duvet or sheets so they can't hide in there.

Frenchfancy · 03/05/2023 20:53

I am amazed and impressed that you only have 10. I do a cull every couple of years and throw out about 30+.

Best odd sock mystery I’ve had was the one that disappeared in a London laundromat. Nothing else went astray, and I practically climbed into the dryer looking for it - gone. Its partner became Socco, favourite toy of one of my cats, a few years later.

aibutohavethisusername · 03/05/2023 22:26

I had to buy more socks again today, got so many odd ones!

They definitely don't turn into Tupperware lids, think about it. There are always more tubs than lids.

No, the back of the washing machine is a portal to another dimension and there's a plant, which is populated entirely by odd socks. Very occasionally, one gets sucked back to Earth, which is how I ended up with one, which nobody could identify, not even relatives.

It's the only sane explanation.

mynumber · 21/10/2023 12:24

Don't throw them away! Use them as rags for cleaning and then throw them!
