Who's your most chilling movie villain?

Something came up earlier on a quiz show and I was trying to explain (to DH who's never seen it) "Misery" and the hobbling scene. I happened to comment it was probably the most awful thing I've seen, cinematically. She plays such a calm yet menacing psychopath. And the shock of that particular scene is like nothing I'd seen before.

It got us talking about who plays the most bone chilling villain. Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men is quietly terrifying as well.

And then of course, the brilliant Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. He plays him superbly, but did he frighten me more than the woman from Misery? Probably not.

Who's your most terrifying film villain, and why?

Norman Bates in Psycho.

PinkFootstool · 01/05/2023 22:40

The Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

No explanation needed tbh....

This is exactly who I was about to mentio even down to the bit about no explanation being needed. I'm 52 now and he still makes me feel sick in the pit of my stomach.

mama Alien in Aliens

MyMachineAndMe · 02/05/2023 00:05

Mother Gothel in Tangled. She's a proper gaslighting arsehole who convinces Rapunzel that's she's too weak, silly and naive to leave the tower and manipulates anyone she possibly can to get what she wants. She stabs Flynn and then blames Rapunzel.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 02/05/2023 00:06

The freaky clown in It.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 02/05/2023 00:26

Kathy Bates in Misery is a masterclass in acting

Hannibal Lecter

The truck driver in Duel

The husband from Sleeping with the enemy.

Dracuuule · 02/05/2023 00:28

Patrick Bateman in American psycho was truly disturbing.

PurpleWisteria1 · 02/05/2023 00:33

Some villains I’ve seen make misery seem positively pleasant!
I know know these are series rather than films but remarry Bolton in game of thrones is probably the most chilling.
Along with Negal from the walking dead in his evil hay day at the beginning of his character arc

FangedFrisbee · 02/05/2023 00:39

Hans lander inglorious basterds. Ie christoph waltz

Northernsouloldies · 02/05/2023 01:11

Blue velvet, Frank played by Dennis hopper. Pure malevolence.

Ben Kingsley playing the psycho gangland criminal in Sexy Beast.
Genuinely abhorrent. But great acting.
I did enjoy the film though.

LadyGAgain · 02/05/2023 01:48

chilling19 · 02/05/2023 01:50

Gary Oldman in Leon

Deathraystare · 02/05/2023 09:40

The Hood from Thunderbirds. Scared me but I fancied him too!!!

stickybear · 02/05/2023 09:49

The wolf / death in Puss in Boots: the Last Wish - genuinely terrifying, can't believe it's in a kids film!

Also agree with Hans Landa and the clown from IT

coloursquare · 02/05/2023 10:25

Norman Bates by a mile!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 02/05/2023 10:31

Gaston. The lynch mob scene is genuinely horrible.

And the Childcatcher - real malevolence in every step he took.
