Help - car and insurance for DS1 and DS2

My DH is going to sell his automatic and buy a small manual car (something like a Toyota Aygo) that both he and DS1 (just passed his test) can drive. Should the car be bought in his name or in DS1’s - does it make a difference for insurance? Does it matter who will drive the car more? Also, DS2 is about to take lessons - will he be able to drive the car too?

Makes no difference whose name the car is in, that's personal choice. Assuming the car will be staying at your home then if your dh has no claims it would be cheaper for insurance to be in his name with ds1 as named driver. You do need to work out who will drive it more though, as insurance will ask who is main driver, and that needs to be whoever uses it most.

If it is going to be used for both ds to learn and for dh to drive around I would put it in dh name. We actually use the runaround far more than the big car.

DS2 can have their own policy as a learner driver.
If DS1 not policy holder some companies won't allow him to accrue NCB years.
Almost all companies will insist on a telematics device, you need to look carefully at the terms for the device.

Young driver insurance is a very complicated expensive minefield.
