Sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place, didn't quite know where to place it.
I'm about to buy a Honda civic 1.6 I-dtec and I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of these?
I don't know anything about cars so any advice would be much appreciated.

Are you aware you’ll regularly need to run it on the motorway steadily above 60mph for 40mins or so to run the cycle that clears the diesel particulate filter?

I had to sell my Honda diesel because I wasn’t doing enough motorway travel.

@PotKettel no, I wasn't aware of that. EEEK! I don't do that sort of driving. What happens if you don't?

All modern diesels have DPFs. They are a type of filter which removes sooty particles from the exhaust. Every so often, the DPF has to burn off the accumulated particles, and if it doesn’t the filter gets literally clogged up & the car goes into limp-home mode. It then has to go into the garage to be fixed, resulting in a big bill.
In order to keep the DPF happy, the car needs proper high speed runs. At least 30 minutes on the motorway every couple of months should be fine. This is why modern diesels are not suitable for a life of only short low-speed journeys around town. I have owned 2 BMW & 1 Mercedes diesels and had no problems with the DPFs because I drove them on the motorway regularly, but I wouldn’t buy another diesel if I didn’t.

@BarelyLiterate thank you. That's very useful to know. It hasnt put me off the car but I'll be sure to take it for a good hoon regularly

I wouldn't buy a diesel car they are being phased out and being made more expensive to run to discourage people from buying them
