Question for anyone dairy free/vegan about cheese

MaccyD100 · 30/04/2023 15:41

Anyone fancy guessing what cheese I might have had earlier?! I went to a cafe with a friend and ordered a vegan cheese toastie. I actually asked what brand it was but the woman serving didn't know and I didn't ask her to go and check as it was busy. Anyway it was amazing! Quite bland, no smell at all, very orange coloured and melted amazingly. If I was going to compare it to anything from my pre vegan days it would be the cheese sauce on nachos. I really want to look for it in the shops. Any guesses?

Applewood is the only vegan cheese I’ve tried that melts well but it isn’t orange. Was it an independent cafe or a chain? If it’s a chain then you can probably find out online.

Bluebells1970 · 30/04/2023 17:13

I've been hedging towards vegan after suddenly developing an intolerance to egg but the cheese is the thing beating me.... I've just tried the cathedral city plant based slices and they taste surprisingly OK but dear god, the smell ... the Applewood is a bit more bearable but I've not found one that melts well.
Sounds like the holy grail of vegan cheese Grin

My DD likes Arla Lacto free. It’s not the cheese you describe but she does use it to make toasted cheese sandwiches and prefers it to the dairy cheddar the rest of the household eat.

Arla lacto free cheese is just cheese with lactase added, it's nothing like vegan cheese.

Following as I've gone dairy free and the lack of cheese is killing me. Nothing melts properly 😔

annonymousmouseinyourhouse · 30/04/2023 18:12

It was more than likely something from the violife range.

MaccyD100 · 30/04/2023 18:26

Can't remember if I've tried violife but I might get some. I like applewood but definitely wasn't that. It was really mild which was fine as I had it with red onion. I've bought a few that I just can't stomach because of the feet smell. This had no smell and was very very melty. I HAVE to find it!

Lots of people like the cathedral city but again the smell puts me off.

Can you phone them and ask?

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 30/04/2023 18:29

The only orange one I’ve seen is the Lidl one.
Mozzarisella is the mozzarella they use in pizza express (you can buy it retail too) - my DC like it.
Vitalite cheese melts fairly well

Ducksurprise · 30/04/2023 18:30

If I had to guess I'd say dairy cheese, I know by my DS reaction that quite often the cheese is not vegan.

However if not I'd also go with Violife. The only 'cheese' that is cheese like.

The block of cathedral city plant based melts well and tastes like cheddar.

Can you phone or email the cafe? And let us all know if they've found the hole grail! It's the only thing I miss in a plant based diet

You expect us to believe that food outlets are ‘quite often’ serving non vegan cheese as vegan. I do hope you’re reporting these places, especially as it’s happening ‘quite often’. They could kill someone.

MaccyD100 · 30/04/2023 19:56

It was a cafe in a park. I'd feel slightly weird phoning them but it's very local and I already fancy another toastie so no hardship to go back next week! I'll ask then.

Unfortunately yes. We eat out far more than average and I no longer order vegan food after multiple reactions. I now tell the server that DS has a dairy allergy, and check all ingredients, far too often dairy is being marketed as vegan.

Have you reported? I’d be interested in the names of these places. Could you PM me with details?

You need to get onto your local trading standards people as this would kill me.

DuranNotSpandeau · 30/04/2023 20:35

I would love you to find out and report back OP! DS has dairy allergy and honestly the smell of some of the cheeses he has is worse than his socks after a PE and after-school club day.🤢

🤣🤣🤣 I know right! Will do.

Thanks pestis that's another one to try.

Sorry to break it to you but I have asked in restaurants before, and there are vegan cheeses that are available to buy in catering that aren't sold in supermarkets, I believe.
