So im im boots earlier queuing up at the pharmacy and i hear the following conversation between a woman and her 3.5 year old (at a guess on the age she was tiny but walking)

Mum - we need to take this medicine back
Child - why
Mum- its been tampered with. Do you know what tampering is?
Child - no
Mum- its where someone has opened it and decided they didnt want it and returned it but we must not use medicine that has been tampered with. Do you know why?
Child - no
Mum- because someone may have put something bad in it and mummy might get ill and then mummy would DIE.

Then repeated it again.

Child at this point was more interested in the stuff on the shelf at this point and i dont think heard her so she kept repeating it.

It was odd.

Yes it is odd and emotionally manipulative to hammer home to a 3 year old that mummy may DIE. She shouldn't need expressly verbalised validation that her child would be unhappy if mummy DIED.

I mean.. that is very odd....

Yep, weird. It's okay to explain things but I'm not sure why a constant reminder of mummy might die is needed.
