Broken little finger

Had the most lovely evening with DD14. We had some good food, caught up on life and for the first time in years she came and sat on my lap.

We were messing around, she knows I hate my palms being tickled.

Anyway it descended into a game of 'mercy'. She went rogue, we both heard my little finger snap.

She is so sorry and that's a shame as I don't want her to be. We both messing about.

I'm just wondering if a splint will sort it in morning. It's the first knuckle bone from nail on the little finger.

Can't be arsed with A&E. It's going a bit bruised, but unless I bend it down purposefully, it doesn't really hurt.

So yeah, thoughts on strapping and splint in morning please.

She's gutted. I said it's okay because I might never be able to wash up or vacuum again 🤣. Bless her. We were being silly.

Yep, buddy strap it to your ring finger, avoid the joints and don’t strap too tight to account for swelling, place a piece of gauze between your fingers if you have any!

Ibuprofen for the pain/swelling. Broken fingers are sore but they do heal quickly! Poor you and poor DD! Flowers

Thank you! DD is worried more than me (and feeling guilty!) . I've got cocodamol for tonight, but will take a trip to chemist in the morning.

I know, I feel more sorry for her than I do me! I can't make her feel any better other than - even show her this, and in the morning pop to the chemist.

Yep, glad agreed not A&E issue. I wouldn't go anyway unless open fracture. She actually might have done me a favour as after hearing the crack, she automatically squeezed my finger back together!

Oh dear. Tomfoolery!

Thank you.

Ooh actually looking at bruising now. Second knuckle down.

I'm trying to be robust and hardcore, but as it gets more black...!

I shall splint all the same as I know there is little alternative.

Stiff (Little Fingers!) I'm old 🤣

Thank you. Definitely no emergency there. I'll splint and take painkillers.

I'm nearly 50, had worse playing netball.

I would call 111 tomorrow.
It moght be broken, and it might need professional help to heal properly (if its in any way dislocated, it might heal that way and you will lose motion on it).

But 111 will likely direct you to a pharmacy with someone who can help and then you can go from there.

I had this last year... took a fall, and had a very swollen, bruised pinky finger. I didnt think it was broken, but as the swelling and lack of movement, and pain persisted, I got it looked at at the pharmacy.

They agreed it didnt seem broken, but it took MONTHS to heal, and I still have phantom pains on it.

Youll be fine with some painkillers tonight, though!

Thank you! Yes I shall get it checked out - when I can get somewhere to get it checked.

It's a bit fat and purple. I wouldn't have worried if it wasn't for the fact we both heard the snap!

I've just done some washing and off to bed.

Luckily I sleep like I'm diving with both arms stretched out together out of the covers!

I'll see how it is when I wake up painkiller free... Eek!

Nn!

I broke my fingers when I was pregnant with ds, every one has healed straight except my little finger that has healed wonky even though it was strapped & splinted.

Goodness, how did that happen if you don't mind me asking.
I've tried to sleep but it's getting a bit 'throbby'. I've also just had COVID so have been sleeping for England anyway.

I would get it x-rayed as soon as possible. It might need resetting if the bone has broken badly.

Sunbird24 · 29/04/2023 04:14

I broke a finger a month ago, A&E did x-rays but as it wasn’t an open fracture they just strapped it to the next one and said it would take about 6 weeks to heal. Mine was tip bone though so no impact to the joint. It took several hours to reach peak swelling and blackness, then the bruising faded gradually over the next week or so (I was putting arnica gel on it twice a day) Take something like brufen as it’s also an anti-inflammatory, and if you can, get a hard splint of some description - you don’t realise how often you knock your fingers on things until you’ve got a broken one! I still can’t type with mine, but it hasn’t ever been unbearably painful. Hope yours heals nicely and it gets you a rest from housework for a while!

tilestoclean · 29/04/2023 06:25

I'd pop to a walk in centre or similar. I broke a finger once and needed physio therapy to ensure I didn't lose mobility in it

Crabacus · 29/04/2023 06:33

All 3 of my DC have broken fingers over the past year 🙄
do you have a minor injuries near you? I'd head there rather than a&e. They were all buddy strapped and all had physio to do to retain mobility.
I snapped a ligament in my little finger a few years back and initially would have sworn it was broken. It took months and lots of physio to recover from - far worse than the broken fingers!
but on the basis that you don't actually know if it's a break or ligament damage, I'd definitely get it x-rayed somewhere.

MattTebbuttsDenimShirt · 29/04/2023 12:07

Morning all - just!

Thankfully I had an uneventful sleep, far too long though. Thank you for your stories and your info @Sunbird24 I've got plenty of Ibuprofen, paracetamol and cocodamol as just recovered from Covid (again 🙄). Typing is something I was think of with regard to - what do I need this finger for? 🤔🤣
@tilestoclean and @Crabacus I was just googling our minor injuries - it doesn't seem to exist any more! I think I'm going to be naughty and go to the chemist for splint things. I can't face Saturday in A&E and I have to be close to there on Monday, so I think I'll go early Monday morning. I know it probably won't make a difference timewise but then I won't have to factor DD (finger breaker - soon to be house cleaner extraordinaire 🤣 !) in to the equation.

@Crabacus I think my ex DDs dad had something similar to you. He'd jabbed a button or something and absolutely effect his index finger up for months! No break but, I can't quite remember how he described it, but it was a long old journey.

I'll strap it up today. I can't afford to go in to town twice either 🙄 so I'll try and get it done on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend all. Sun is shining. Don't break any bones!!

Hate to break it to you OP (excuse the pun), but Monday is a BH so you will have DD to consider... You might also have her home on Tuesday if her school is closed due to strike action.

Wishing you all the best!!!

Haha thank you, yes, I'm well aware of that and they will be striking, but she'll be with her Dad from Sunday evening.

If you knew me, you'd be surprised at my planning 🤣

I'm very impressed😂 I can just imagine being in your scenario and maxing out the cocodamol - no way would I remember BHs and strike days! All the best!

I fell getting off the couch when I went to the midwife, got my Jeans caught on the lever that lifted the couch, landed on the fingers of my right hand. My fingers swelled like a cartoon, could see them throbbing. 5 days later, I was induced as I had developed pre eclampsia, had 60 hours in labour & broken fingers.

Oblomov23 · 30/04/2023 06:30

Don't waste your time with A&E, they do nothing other than give you a plaster /gauze thing that must cost 3pence.

Crikey. Poor you!!

I still haven't gone. It's a financial thing now to get there. DD wants me to go as she still feels awful.

I'll see what tomorrow brings.

If we both hadn't heard the snap, I wouldn't bother. I've seen so many complications on here, and in RL recently.

You win though @Nat6999 ! Birth and broken fingers - just when you're feeling like breaking somebody else's!

I just don't know. Time and money.

Mochacino · 01/05/2023 22:35

Get someone to have a look. You don’t have to have broken a bone to damage a finger. If you’ve an injury at the joint below your nail as you describe it, you may have a mallet injury which can leave your finger deformed at that joint. Neighbour strapping as shown in other posters diagrams is indeed for finger injuries but not specifically for a mallet.

givemecoffeenow · 02/05/2023 08:11

I think you really should get it checked out. If it’s broken it might need resetting before it starts healing itself in a deformed way. Broken bones can also affect the blood supply. When my DM broke her wrist they had to reset it straight away as the break was actually cutting off blood supply. A broken bone really isn’t something you should ignore 👀

MattTebbuttsDenimShirt · 02/05/2023 20:39

I'm going early doors tomorrow.

I haven't had the money to take both me and DP into town, also she doesn't want to be sitting with me for up to 8 hours. It's been bank holiday, and school strikes.

I'll leave 7am tomorrow, she can get herself to school.

We'll see what happens I guess!

It's not overly painful or swollen, but we both heard the 'snap' initially I did think it was first knuckle down from nail, but it's the second one down that is bruised and swollen. Who knows 🤷

I'll let you know. Thank you ♥️
