Why has my potty trained son who’s never had an accident poking himself?

My son has been potty trained 4 months ish. He is 4.5 and it was a bit of a struggle, when he finally did it though we’ve not had any accidents (poo was the problem he’d been ok with wee for a year) and suddenly we’ve had 3 poos in a row. He even said he was going to the toilet and he was too late? Is this the way it goes or should I be worried?? I am worried! Is he doing it on purpose? He was very difficult to potty train he really dug his heels in, he starts school in September! Help! Advice really appreciated!

One of my boys used to do this, for a long time. He was about six when he stopped - and I'm pretty sure it was only because I took him to the doctor for a stern talking to. He was also late to potty train with poos.

In his case, he just didn't care that he was sitting in his own shit so long as he didn't have to stop whatever he was doing.

My only advice is to ask him why, and if he doesn't have a reason then just hammer home now disgusting it is and does he want his friends to know he poos himself? If a child is perfectly able just not willing, I don't think it's wrong to embarrass them about it. Not publicly. But so they pause before doing it again.

It is possible that this is overflow from constipation. Look up encopresis, and check the Eric website for details - its remarkably common.

You probably need a doctor to feel his tummy to see if he's impacted inside.

Mine did this and was constipated

Thanks for replies. Much appreciated I’m at a loss. Definitely not constipated, he takes medication and I’m strict with giving it he’s not constipated at all.
he was hard to potty train, it was like he didn’t want to he knew what he had to do just wanted it his own way.
we’ve come out to London for the day and he’s done it in the middle of st James park. It’s not like he’s a baby he’s massive for a 4 yr old. I’m really worried/upset as he was so hard to potty train and now we’re back at square 1! Also, he’d just been taken to a toilet where we were before 20? Minutes ago.
I think I’m gonna have to take trousers and pants off and stay home all weeek that’s what’s done it before.
