Opinions on babies breathing

Hi all,

My 8 week old sometimes catches his breath which can frighten me. He did it just now on and off for about a minute. It almost sounds as though he is holding his breath and then suddenly gasps… should I be worried?

Thanks

Sounds like periodic breathing which is normal in babies, happens in around 72% of babies aged 0-2 weeks and around 29% of babies 6-12mo

Looks scary but is really normal.

Babies forget to breathe - that’s why they’re more at danger of SIDS - this is totally normal yet terrifying

And it’s why breathing sensors don’t go off until after a 20second stop!

Why do they forget to breathe? How the hell have humans got this far if their young can't manage something as fundamental as that?!

Hope your baby is ok OP. Mine has snored from birth and I took him to the GP who checked his airways. Apparently they're normal but he still does it. Maybe take him for a check up if you are really concerned.

Hi @Spencer2

just wondering did your baby grow out of that? My baby is 5 weeks and does the same thing and gasps too. I'm so anxious all the time.

thanks in advance
