Buying bread from bakers

I just passed a bakery shop that I'm not normally near and went in as they had lovely looking bread in window. Man infront of me paid then my turn. Woman went to window picked bread with her bare hands. I said something about the fact she'd just taken money from a previous customer and was now handling bread and she said "we're allowed to".

I left the shop.

Does anyone else feel this is a step backwards? We were all so paranoid over the past couple of years re keeping things clean and now this "is allowed".

@Hellenbach, I'm happy to pay for quality and cleanliness.

We have a bakery near to us ( provided the buns or whatever it was for William and Kate's wedding). We use them usually but we are away just now. I think they are £4 a bread but they pick up with the bag they wrap it in.

Last time I bought a baguette in a French bakery, it was wrapped in a small piece of paper on the middle. No need for dirty hands to touch the actual bread!
