What age do you think is appropriate to read Harry Potter to a child

My son is five and a half, I'm wondering if he's too young still for Harry Potter. He loves listening to me read story books to him, and is okay with longer chapter books. I love HP and would love for him to enjoy it too, so don't want to scare him!

The first two books would be ok, then it gets a bit darker. Tbh I think it would be a bit "wasted" on him - he will absolutely love them when he's a bit older (say 9yo) and there are lots of books aimed at younger children that you can read to him now.

I think too young. He wouldn't understand it fully or appreciate it. Save it for when he can and then you can enjoy it together

Has he seen the films or is he generally aware of HP?

I'd say that age is ok for the first one or two books but as they get darker as they go it might be better to wait, really depends on your child.

My DS is 8 and we're only just starting to think about reading them however he has seen most of the films but switched off one of the last ones as he found it too frightening, so we're holding off on the books for now.

I'll hang on a while longer. He hasn't watched the films as I'd like him to read the books first. He's aware of HP as has heard me listening to audiobooks lol

Agree with waiting.

10YO DS loves Harry Potter and began reading them at 9YO. 8YO DS is kind of getting into it now thanks to his brother and Hogwarts Legacy. But he still doesn't quite have the patience for long reads.

Never read them myself though.
