What do you think of murder memorabilia?

Was having a browse through Etsy and saw there’s a whole section selling Jeffrey Dahmer items. Mugs, t-shirts, posters…references to Just Eat etc.

I appreciate he’s a bit of a hot topic because of the recent successful Netflix series, but I then searched a couple of other very infamous serial killers and they have plenty too. What do you think of this sort of thing in general?

I think that time fades notoriety and terrible murderers just become storybook villains in many people’s minds. They stop being crimes with human victims and become legends. I can’t get worked up over it. Look at the entertainment value of Jack the Ripper, Burke and Hare, Guy Fawkes, Sweeney Todd etc. Dahmer and co are just a bit newer.

That’s very true, @ComtesseDeSpair . I think you’re right on the storybook villain idea. With time, the seriousness of the crimes does lessen somewhat, in our minds.

Who buys this stuff. The true crime obsessives? It’s all sick.

I watch true crime documentaries and dramas but I would never buy memorabilia. That sort of thing makes me think of that recent female murderer who had a house with posters of Dahmer etc

In my opinion. I think its pretty sick. Why on earth would anyone want items to remind them of sick evil people.

No.

There are AI bots which create listings of merch on Etsy, Redbubble etc of things or people who are trending. A drop ship company then creates the cheap printed merch usually from China. Same thing happened a while back with George Floyd when his name was trending at the time.
