How can I tidy up all our bastard chargers & cables?

We have chargers EVERYWHERE and I STILL can’t find the right one when I need it! As a family we have a lot of Apple products (so both USB and that newer charger, I think USB-C?) but also Kindles, Fitbit and a million other things.

How, how, how can I organise this better? I saw Apple had a (very expensive) charging unit but I don’t think it had all the ports we would need. It was also big on wireless charging which never works for our phones due to the heavy duty cases.

DS got a label maker for Xmas so I have put labels on them all but they still disappear / wander off / tangle themselves into a ball with the others.

Has anyone managed this, please?!?

Jumping on this hoping someone has an answer. I'll add husband's bastard pile of crap from his pockets, sunglasses, wallet . . .

In a drawer - each cable wound loosely around your fingers, then stuffed inside a toilet roll inner. Then they all stand up neatly in the drawer so you can see what you’ve got and find the one you need quickly.

Ooh, interesting idea. Hell of a lot cheaper than the Apple option! Maybe I could bring the label maker into play again?!

I have a console unit with wicker baskets with different types of chargers in each basket, so one for all DH camera ones, 2 for my Apple ones, 1 for DHs other ones and battery packs, 1 for printer inks and long Ethernet cable and printer cable if needed as printer wifi can be iffy, it all takes up a lot of room. They are all labelled with a brother labeller and we still find the odd random plug

Iwasjustasking · 26/04/2023 22:10

Sorry that was a really long link, it’s basically a box you plug in that you can then plug up to 10 usb cables in!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/04/2023 22:12

We're mostly an Apple house, so we have chargers plugged in where we need them everyday, each bedroom, the living room etc. No one is allowed to move them. We then have a box with separate zip lock bags for apple plugs, lightning cables, usb cables, usb-c cables, other plugs with usb connectors and travel adaptors. If anyone is going away they have to take cables and plugs from here and put them back when they return. Everyone has a charging pad by their bed (non-apple ones which aren't actually brilliant). It mostly works, but every now and again I buy extra cables from Amazon to replace the ones that disappear or get lost when DH moves them. We also leave cables plugged into a usb plug in our spare room for visitors in case they forget theirs and borrow one which inevitably accidentally gets taken home with them.

This is a revelation!!!! Loving the toilet roll idea

User158349890 · 26/04/2023 22:20

I have found those cheap see through make up bags are useful for plugs and wires we don't use so much. We also keep the printer inks in one. I keep my Apple Watch spare straps in one of those small cases from Amazon meant for cables.

Mull · 27/04/2023 07:25

I really like the simplicity of this but since DH and I last upgraded our iPhones we need a mixture of USB and USB-C to make this work. Why do they keep changing the connectors 😫

I looked up some DIY charging units on Pinterest last night but I think I’d be too worried about overheating using extension leads etc? So think I’ll look for a storage box with compartments for the cables…

Kids have got ikea peg boards with a usb socket Velcro’s on - there’s app controlled lights round the side it - very cool.

I’ve got little pull out drawers on the dresser and each drawer has a different sort of usb.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 27/04/2023 08:49

I bought my boys one of those dangling mesh storage hangers from ikea. One section is for their ear defenders, one for fiddle toys, one for plugs/wired power bricks, one for earphones and pods, one for wires, and the bottom one for one of the cats because it is a dick.

I have an old makeup bag stuffed with spare cables in my room, and an old pencil case in my backpack that has a power bank and the three cables for my phone/kindle/switch in it.

BouncingWorms · 27/04/2023 09:03

Magnetic chargers. You put a wigit in each device and then they can all be charged with the same cable. You'd have to replace your cable hoard but easily worth it to not have to think.

MagpiePi · 27/04/2023 11:11

I got a plug from IKEA that you can plug 3 cables in and leave it permanently plugged in on the end of the kitchen worktop where all the keys/wallets/post type things get put. Only £4 at the moment so you could get a few to be left around the house maybe.

I use those small claw-shaped hair clips and a label top and bottom of the cable.
Each person has their own USB adapter. We’re an Apple household so I have lightning cables in handbag, car etc.
