Best 'proper' board games for 5 and 7 year old?

BergamotMouse · 24/04/2023 19:47

Im fed up of orchard toys games. Want something that's a bit more fun for us parents. We know nothing about board games!

We're enjoying uno at the moment but want to branch out from card games to a proper board.

Ones I'm wondering about are:
My first carcassonne
Catan junior
Ticket to ride (junior version)
Junior monopoly.

Interested in other recommendations too. We are happy to pair up with the kids and work together with them so an adult and a child on each team.

Thanks

Scrabble

Can recommend junior ticket to ride! Aso risk junior. Minecraft heroes of the village is 7+ but is a co-operative game so the 5yr old can be subtly helped! Same for Forbidden Desert/Island, both co-ops (not forbidden sky which for some reason is a lot harder!). Mine was playing King of New York without much help at 6 I think, though I had to read the cards. Dungeon Mayhem is also pretty simple.

Catan Junior is great (and a good gateway to proper Catan).

We first tried it in our local library. It might be a good idea to find out if yours has board games so that you can try before you buy.

Frustration is a good one.

Castle Panic, a great co-op game for the family.

Meh.... Compared to games like Castle Panic or Orchard or Catan Junior it's really dull.

DD likes Cluedo, Scrabble, Enchanted Forest, and Ludo.

SpringLobelia · 24/04/2023 20:01

We liek 5 second rule in our house. Good fun, suits all the family and can be left and abandoned when everyone egts tired.

they should be able to play the Carcassonne full game (without farmers) without difficulty, especially if you're playing with them.

It's a lovely little game you can play as adults as well :)

Tailrunner · 24/04/2023 20:07

My DDs enjoyed Carcassone but we didn't use the junior version as the adult one is fairly simple if you take the rivers out to start with. Junior Catan was good at that age plus labyrinth, junior ticket to ride, qwirkle and enchanted forest.

I know you said board games rather than card games but Sleeping Queens, Rat a tat cat, taco cat goat cheese pizza and ghost blitz are all great for families.

"Game of life" is my goddaughters favourite!

00100001 · 24/04/2023 20:09

Hey, That's my fish is good too.

RandomMess · 24/04/2023 20:09

There is something special about Frustration as there is so little tactic involved. Usually one person beyond frustrated every few games 🤣

MartinFowler · 24/04/2023 20:10

Bugs in the kitchen, throw throw burrito and cockroach poker

RandomMess · 24/04/2023 20:10

@00100001 I aptly renamed that "Fuck off that's my fish" 🤣

I think kids just like the popper :p I'd rather play Sorry!

Snugglemonkey · 24/04/2023 20:15

We play monopoly, dobble and card games the most.

reluctantbrit · 24/04/2023 20:26

Ludo
Rummikub
Enchanted Forest

Monopoly - just get the normal version. DD got a junior one when she turned 4 and found it boring as hell. We just simplified the rules and it's one of her favourite ones.

BearKey · 24/04/2023 20:27

Junior cluedo? My 5 year old loves guess who.

Toomuchleopard · 24/04/2023 20:32

We have absolutely loads of board games. Good ones for younger players:
Dobble
Outfoxed
Superfarmer
Sleeping Queens
Rat a tat Cat
Dragonwood
The Amazing Labyrinth

Kersplat is a fabulous version of frustration… and a little less frustrating 😆

Ukholidaysaregreat · 24/04/2023 20:34

Enchanted Forest! Yeay!

wildinthecountry · 24/04/2023 20:36

Junior scrabble , Also for team pairings Scotland Yard is a good one .

namechange3394 · 24/04/2023 20:38

Outfoxed is good.

Labryinth probably a little bit complicated for the smaller one? I think that really came into its own around 7 for both ours.
