Do the royal family get a salary or pocket money?

I'm just popping to the shop to get a packet of crisps and a can of Coke.

I've no idea why, but I was just pondering if Kate Middleton would be able to do the same. Does she receive a salary or pocket money, and if so how much do you think she gets?

I know they live an incredible lifestyle with money no object, but it's not like they have bills to pay. So how much do you think they get in their own bank accounts?

Or is it all on a company credit card and there isn't actually any cash sent their way?

They get official funds for the expenses of official duties (paying their staff, travel etc)

And are wealthy from other income streams too. The Wales get the income from the Duchy of Cornwall. The previous PoW reinvested a lot into the Duchy its activities and people, but it's run on commercial lines, and even after that reinvestment, there's plenty to fund their day-to-day living and non-official activities. Plus for the Waleses there'll be income from investments (William inherited from his mother, for example). No salary, but plenty of spending money.

I wonder this too. Do they have a special royal bank account? Who's it with? Does the king have a bank card? Does it just say 'Charles' on the front or 'His Majesty King Charles' or 'C Mountbatten-Windsor'

As the new Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate receive a majority of their income from a private estate called the Duchy of Cornwall, which was established in 1337 to financially support the heir to the throne. So I guess that's what they would use to as you say "go and buy a can of coke and packet of crisps" which would be hilarious to me for some reason.

lol I remember Diana nipping out to the local shop for sweets, one photographer asked why she couldn't get a servant to go for her, apparently the Queen was not impressed with that suggestion!

I'm sure they do, she's often seen out in the shops. I've never heard of William or Charles popping to Waitrose though.

Maybe they can only use cash... I picture the scene in Bridget Jones where she's digging around for the money for packet of Wotsits outside the court house.

As the royal family, is the money really their own and can they spend it on whatever they want? Could William pop down the bookies and place a few bets, or is that not a good use of public money.

Re bank card... William and Harry used to go by the surname Wales when they were younger, so Harry's card would have said 'Harry Wales'... maybe not bank card, but I know he had a membership card for something else and this is what it said. I think if you're royal, you can have whatever want on it!

I liked the story where she went into a butcher shortly after her wedding. He said to her, 'you can't afford that's! And she, apparently, said, 'now I can!!!'
I'd reckon they get debit cards like the rest of us. Maybe a bogus address for amazon deliveries?

They have private funds. Nothing to do with public money. They have the income for the duchy, and the others have their own private income from inheritances, investments. That’s their money, in a bank with a bank card like anyone else. No public scrutiny over it as it isn’t public funds. They can spend that however they like.

The late Queen Mother did - don't know about the rest but it's likely.

Well, saying she banked with them is the polite way round. Gossip was that she usually had an enormous overdraft and each time the late Queen cleared it, she ran it up again.

They'll have staff to do a lot of their shopping for them. And will probably have a lot of (major) purchases by invoice being sent to their office for settlement (no transaction actually in the shop/gallery/atelier)

But I bet they do have a debit card for little ad hoc purchases - perhaps shopkeepers or ice cream van owners near their DC's schools will know if it was the parent or a detective who paid?

Re: the fags... She was known as a smoker back in the day and there definitely used to be the odd pap photo of her puffing away, but they've seemingly been scrubbed from the web (along with the French topless photos!)

I used to work in a 5* hotel with lots of footballers and celebs and the like, a lot of them bank with Coutts. You don't see many of them with a Natwest card for example. A lot also have American Express.

I'd imagine they have a fairly healthy amount in a current account there with a debit & credit card like everybody else for day to day spending. I wouldn't be surprised if they hardly ever see the credit card bill, it's probably just taken care of, how lovely!

Someone told a story on here about being in a beach and getting their ice creams paid for by William or Catherine so assume they do have a debit card or cash. There’s film of Charles somewhere abroad at a market buying stuff for the grandchildren and he chooses and then you see his assistant pulling out the local currency in that way I am sure lots of us have done trying to work out which note is which.

I wonder if they ever go out and buy Battenberg cake. It was the family name of Prince Philip until changed to Mountbatten.

It used to be said that Elizabeth II only ever carried cash to put into the collection at church services - a note folded and ironed flat with her face outwards.
