Cardigan with belt but no belt loops or holes: any sewing geniuses?

Sewing on belt loops would look weird so is it possible to create holes for the belt to go through myself without ruining the cardigan? Material is a polyester velour. Why such things would be created in the first place is another issue!

Can you sew at all? If so, you could copy the set of belt loop they have on dresses - loop of thread that’s big enough for the belt to pass through, then strengthen it by blanket-stitching around the thread.

I’d make thread ones like a chain stitch and see them in the sides.

Or you could finger knit them and see them on. Use embroidery thread.

My experience is limited to sewing on beavers badges - the thread loop sounds very sensible. I'll google how to do it!

When I make holes for the ties on a wrap cardigan to go through I just use the button hole function on my sewing machine. Reinforce behind with a bit of iron on interfacing first.

If you are doing it on a seam unpick the seam a little and then reinforce each side.

I'd chain stitch loops with embroidery thread. They won't last forever but should be good enough.

There’s probably a YouTube video somewhere! Embroidery thread is the best option. Happy sewing!

Thanks all!

Don't make holes in your cardigan, if that's what you mean!

Some matching or dark coloured elastic (like knicker elastic) held in a loop and sewn in place would do it. Or you could sew poppers on the sides of your cardy and the belt so you can hold it in place without anything visible.
