What is the best American diner in London/S.E?

I need to organise a birthday lunch. I have tried a few, none of them were memorable.

Is any kind of diner particularly good? Aren't they generally the greasy spoons of the US?

I know, but that's the brief: grease, large portions, huge cocktails 😃

Have a look at Bodeans, Covent Garden

Unfortunately, we have ruled out The Big Easy as it has gone downhill. I have never tried Bodeans so worth looking at it. Are there any quirky, non chain places still left?

Maxwell's in Covent Garden?

Used to be fantastic when it was up in Hampstead, only been once since it moved to CG and it wasn't as good, but may have improved.

Snap! I also remembered Maxwell's and I've just been looking at their menus which have a fair amount of choice and some good deals. Passayunk and Maxwell's are the main contenders now!
