Dog keeps pissing on my sofa

I have a shizu x he's slightly over a year old he pisses over my sofas . I was told this was marking. And advised to get him neauted. I have done this although it was only 5 days ago. Every time there is something not normally there or new like a box or something he would pee/mark it. Since his op he has stopped doing that but he's still peeing on my sofas. I have used pet pee odour remover and that power soda stuff . But he's still doing it at night time. I always put him out for a wee before bed and he does go.

I'm getting new sofas in a couple of months and I can't get then ruined right away they are alot of money and I'm fed up with my house stinking . I feel dirty . As its only been 5 days since his op do I just need to give it a bit more time ?

It's a myth that neuturing stops marking. However this doesn't sound like marking if he's doing it overnight. It's probably separation anxiety, can he sleep upstairs with you?

mrsfennel · 23/04/2023 12:15

I think it might be a symptom of something else. Does he get anxious at all?

Can you try taking outside every hour for a few days, so he doesn't get the chance?

Get a crate for him to sleep in at night

Hes definitely not anxious he also has company of my other dog. He does not cry or anything. He does not pee/mark when I leave him when I go out. So I don't think its separation anxiety.

He paws at the door when he wants to go out .

I don't really want to do the crate thing. I know some people are ok with it but im just not keen especially since I did not do it when we first got him and it might cause him stress if he's in a cage and my German is not ?

I definitely don't want him upstairs its bad enough he's peeing /marking down stairs I don't want it to happen up stairs as well.

Honestly I would crate him or lock him in the kitchen at night.

I was thinking about the kitchen. But then I think he will scratch shit out of my doors. I could possibly do the hall way . That way they can both go out there and have each others company. And it mogjt break the sofa habit. Worth a try

You need a behaviourist. This sounds like quite an anxious dog.

In the meantime, get some calming tablets or a plugin.

My Dads dog had never been crated but had to have a cruciate ligament op so we had to get one. He was v concerned she would hate it but she loved it and goes in all the time. Maybe worth trying to borrow one and see if he likes it?

Would he not show other signs though . I hear both dogs plays at night. And they sleep together. So he's not on his own . He does not cry or anything. And surely he would be anxious when I leave the house abd pee. But he does not. I will try the plug in as no harm.

Stop them playing together at night. They both get excited he has a little bladder so of course his bladder is more stimulated. The bigger dog has a bigger bladder. He's a teenager so gets excited, pees and is in trouble.

Night time is NOT playtime!!

He might well be showing other signs which you're not picking up on.

The fact he has companionship and isn't crying at night doesn't mean he can't be anxious.

If you don't want your new sofas to go the same way, please get a behaviourist.
